Professor Hodkinson draws patients' attention to this important document regarding the extended period of time for personal prescriptions.

Dear colleagues,

I wish to alert you of the recent government gazette, published on 30 April 2020, which states that the validity of prescribed medications will no longer be 6 months, but has been extended to 12 months. This is a big victory for patients with chronic conditions in this country, particularly those in the public health system. I wish to particularly acknowledge the important role played by Professors Joel Dave and Marc Blockman, who were central in tabling this proposal and engaging with various stakeholders to obtain support to get the national Ministry of Health to alter this policy.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DIVISION OF RHEUMATOLOGY, Professor Bridget Hodkinson

Colleagues, Patients, Family Members and Interested Persons

Welcome to the updated page of the Division of Rheumatology, Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and University of Cape Town (UCT).

Rheumatology can be very much a challenging individual or family issue, with either permanent or temporary disabilities. Good communication is one of the most powerful tools we can use to ensure the correct treatment, the best rehabilitation and the most effective team that can work together on securing the best outcomes. Facebook is a very useful and simple team platform for sharing knowledge, exchanging best practices, celebrating successes and de-mystifying medical conditions.
As a start, I would like to introduce the remarkable Divisional staff I am lucky to have working with me, and to make sure you have our departmental contact details and a general email address that you can use for queries.
Professionally, this page will also alert practitioners to opportunities for further learning, circulate interesting new academic publications that relate to our field, and post guidelines, handbooks, resources that make such a difference to positive outcomes and welcome milestones of recovery. I also hope that this page will inspire young doctors to consider this field of specialisation – we are facing a very long journey in Africa in building capacity beyond our borders, and we would welcome any opportunities of collaboration that will further this worthwhile project.

Please feel welcome to post comments, offer insights and ask questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Professor Bridget Hodkinson
