Ladies and Gentlemen

Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication of the members of the Health Centre South Coast, who have shown exceptional resilience and commitment in the face of adversity and adversity it was. 2024 came with its own challenges not unlike the preceding years.

The 2024 SA Army MSDS BMT intake and subsequent challenges surrounding that. This included the running around with the ones going to Russia and Cuba over and above the normal day to day challenges. The MSDS grouping made up more than one third of our health care activities this year. The medical and nursing departments put up their hands, put shoulder to the wheel and managed all of these in their stride. I recall a day when Maj Kriek reported that they had 221 sick reports in one day, what can we say other than well done.

Maj Kriek excelled this year in managing all of these processes. In fact she did so well that the organisation sent her to Lohatlha to go and do the same there. She was our ambassador and did a fine job of it. What an example of an officer and a lady.

We had challenges with our pharmacies not meeting the statutory requirements. Oudtshoorn without a responsible pharmacist and George operating a pharmacy which was not registered as well as no responsible pharmacist. Luckily all this was resolved through hard work and dedication. Capt Keuler managed to register the George pharmacy, the first SAMHS pharmacy to be registered from scratch in the past 20 or 25 years. This was no easy job and I know what lengths she had to go through and battles which had to be fought. This was impressive! The Oudtshoorn pharmacy also went through their ups and downs and now we have a responsible pharmacist in Ms Hlwitana and is functioning like clockwork. A special word of thanks to Ms Esa who managed the Oudtshoorn pharmacy as a community service pharmacist through an IG inspection, director pharmacy inspection, as well as a pharmacy council inspection. Well done!

Patient admin was shocked with the resignation of Me du Plessis and I sat with my hands in Ssgt Witbooi’s hair about the way forward. Then we were blessed!!! First we acquired Mr Boesak who came in like a fresh breeze and transformed our front desk to a functional, working and highly effective station. Then Pte Skefu who augmented the administrative part of patient admin soon to be joined by Pte Swartz and then Pte Jacobs. Ours must be the most up to date Health Centre as far as capturing is concerned.

Our George Sickbay has again been enormous in promoting the image of the organisation as far as effectiveness and professionalism is concerned. The George Sickbay is often referred to as the flagship of the SAMHS Sickbays and we are proud to be associated with you. We do not forget you, we might not recognise or visit you as often as we should or we like to, but the knowledge that you are there and independent, allows us to put our energy towards our focus of main effort. To Capt Reitz and her team, well done!

Our dental department excelled and both Dr da Costa and Capt Louw topped the number of patient contacts in the Western Cape. Capt Louw’s efficient management of Oral Health Cha sets the bar high for the rest of the country to follow

Our psychology and Social work departments top the stats in the respective areas in the Western Cape. Their involvement in various other projects such as the Spousal Forum and U-Lab is a huge effort in expanding our footprint of influence

Capt Goliath and Capt Leta are leading the pack in ancillary health in the Western Cape. Capt Leta has been transferred to the Military Base Hospital and he leaves huge shoes to be filled.

Our OECP’s were again required to do absolutely everything with absolutely nothing. They worked early and they worked late and they worked over weekends. They were required to work in Port St Johns and Gansbaai, and Touwsriver and Cape Town and they are leaving today for Trans-Enduro and Mitchels Plain Festival. Well done!

To our administrative staff the loggies SSgt Barnard and SSgt Kgatlane. I know you operate in a frustrating environment, I can associate with your ordeals. Thank you for keeping our wheels rolling, we know that you drive the processes sometimes without success.

To our cleaners, Oam, Nomhle and Nonnie, as well as the CHAR cleaners and groundsmen in their absence. Thank you for keeping the Sickbays neat and clean. It is a pleasure and privilege to receive complements on the cleanliness of our facilities.

We were also blessed with an incredibly competent, dedicated and professional team of community service health care professionals in Dr Cardoso, Dr da Costa and Ms Esa. Each in their own way has made a huge difference in bringing new objective views on ways to improve client care and service delivery. You will be sorely missed and any organisation that wishes to employ you will be fortunate.

And then last but not least Brendeen. I do not know what we will do without you? There is not one single person who can say that they are not touched by you and your calm effectiveness in managing the HR and so many other processes in the Health Centre. We all thank you!

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and we had a number of members who excelled in sport.
Dr Nel is still the best squash player in the SAMHS and has been taken up in the SANDF Masters team.
Capt vd Veen was taken up and represented the SANDF in cycling.
SSgt W.C. Benson was taken up in the SANDF shore angling team
SSgt Cupido was taken up in the SANDF cricket team

A number of our members lost family members and friends over the past year and our thoughts goes out to them, especially as we are entering the festive season.
A large number of our members returned from deployment and courses, where they acted as ambassadors for the Health Centre South Coast, we are so proud of you.
Then there are still three members not with us, Lt Botha, SSgt van Jaarsveld and Sgt Johannes. We miss them and know they will be back with us soon.

Let us not forget the extended Health Centre South Coast family, the spouses, partners and families who have to deal with the management of all the stressors experienced at work. Hats-off to you in your absence. Please convey my gratitude to them!

This ceremony is not just about the certificates we presented; it is about recognizing the spirit of service, sacrifice, and strength that defines each one of you.
I sometimes wonder if a group as successful, passionate, professional and diligent as you, need me. I sometimes feel superfluous when I witness your passion for your profession and that inspires me to try to be more.

In the military, we are often called upon to perform our duties under the most challenging circumstances. The Health Centre South Coast is a testament to this reality, where the physical and emotional battles are fought daily. It is here that we witness the true essence of courage and the profound impact of camaraderie and support.
As we present these certificates, let us remember that they represent more than just an acknowledgment of your achievements, they are a symbol of hope, a reminder of the strength within us, and a celebration of the indomitable spirit that drives us forward.
Let us continue to support one another, to lift each other up in times of need, and to strive for excellence in all that we do. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will continue to overcome any challenge that comes our way.

Congratulations to all our recipients. Your zeal and dedication are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for your service, and may you continue to thrive and excel in all your endeavours.

Let me end off by thanking the organising committee for this wonderful event. Next year…drum roll… will be the turn of nursing to wow us with certificate ceremony and year-end function.

This is the biggest group gathering of the HCSC ever and I stand proud in front of you. We will take a group photo directly after the event, before we eat. Thank you to Capt van der Veen

Enjoy the day, enjoy the rest of the year.

If you are travelling, be safe. Rest and recuperate.

I thank you.

HEALTH CENTRE SOUTH COAST MOVEMBER CAMPAIGN

20 NOVEMBER 2024

The Health Centre South Coast concluded their 7th annual Movember campaign on Wednesday 20 November 2024. Over the past 7 years we have managed to raise awareness on men's health amongst male soldiers not only at the Infantry School, but all through the SANDF. We are also proud to say that this is the 7th year that we have partnered with Buffelsfontein who again provided us with products for our lucky draw.

Men face unique stressors related to traditional roles and expectations, especially men in the defence force. These include work-related stress, the pressure to provide for families, and challenges in balancing work and personal life.

Mental health issues in men are often underreported and underdiagnosed. Men might express their emotional distress through anger, irritability or risk taking behaviours. In a hyper masculine South African society this is evident through the high rates of interpersonal violence perpetrated by men on other members of society. As we are entering the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, we take cognisance of this fact and strive and pledge to support this initiative wherever we may go. Not only during this period of 16 days, but every day of the year.

The event was attended by Infantry School staff members, Health Centre South Coast staff members, members from the Western Cape Department of Education and the Oudtshoorn Provincial Hospital. A total of 245 members attended the event.

The presenters were Dr Lynnie Boon district psychiatrist for the Western Cape Department of Health in the Garden Route/ Central Karoo districts and Dr Jonathan Cardoso, Community service medical officer Oudtshoorn Sickbay.

The winners of the lucky draw were Lt T.M. Letanta (3rd prize), Cpl B.M. Khumalo (2nd prize) and Mr W.E. Jacobs (1st prize).

We believe that the awareness created today will make a difference to someone present.
