Iyengar Yoga is a method of practice and instruction based on the teachings of Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar.The method offers a safe and systematic progression of yoga postures to develop each students ability. The system of teaching is methodical and progressive, emphasising safety and precision in alignment. This approach develops self awareness through the practice of asanas and attention to the body, breath and mind. Standing poses are emphasised at the beginning to build strength and ease of movement, increasing vitality and to improve coordination and balance.Gradually sitting postures,forward bends,twist, inversions,backbends and pranayama are introduced. Guruji Iyengar refined the use of props in the asana practice. Use of props such as blankets, bolsters, straps, blocks, wall ropes facilitates learning and helps with adjustment in yoga postures according to individual needs. The Iyengar method develops strength,endurance, optimal body alignment and flexibility.The attention to detail and cultivation of awareness is meant not only to maintain safety in the practice but to develop the mental benefits of complete meditation in action.
