On World Health Day we’d like to create awareness about the importance of looking after your ears, nose and throat. There are many issues arising from these and some of them include infections, tonsillitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, ear infections, allergies or swallowing problems. Look after your health by following small rules like drinking enough water. It helps maintain your body’s fluid balance, it can energise your muscles, your skin will benefit from it (hydration), helps your kidneys (you’ll know this by the light colour of your urine). Drinking water also helps with the maintenance of your vocal cords. It provides enough hydration.

Strep throat is when your throat has been infected by a bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. The one main symptom is a healthy throat that quickly became a sore throat. Swelling, fever or swollen tonsils can also be symptoms. It can also spread when someone coughs.

Even when you are asleep, your ears are working. Although they are working and ‘hearing’, they do not process the information in a way they do when you are awake. It’s also why you will sometimes wake up, because you heard something. Your ears never sleep.

Have you ever heard of Chronic sinusitis? It’s inflammation of the sinuses and it can last for weeks. It’s also associated with nasal polyps. These polyps are growths that line the nose or sinuses. They are soft and painless, and mostly seen with people who have asthma or allergies. They cause headaches, loss of smell or taste, stuffy nose, nosebleeds and more.

Nodules are sometimes thought of as a callous and a polyp as a blister. Vocal cord nodules are usually a result of excessive or repeated misuse of your voice. They can however also form after one traumatic episode of voice misuse. For example, a cheerleader at a school’s sports day might scream so loud and extreme on one day that it can cause permanent damage.

Contact Dr Anton van Lierop if you have any concerns about your voice, or your child’s.

"Many structures in the inner ear, called the vestibular system together, send signals to the brain, helping you to align yourself and keep your balance. Two parts of the inner ear called the utricle and the saccule track the head’s angular motions (from side to side and up and down), and sense gravity, too. Certain structures that shape loops, which contain fluid, track the head’s rotation.” – Enticare.com

How do you know when a nosebleed has become serious? And what can this mean to your health?

When bleeding continues for more than 15 minutes, or the bleeding is heavy, and it doesn’t allow you to breather normally. This is when you know it is a more serious problem. It is common in children but do however occur in adults. It might be a sign for an infection, but rather seek medical attention to know the exact cause and treatment. Remember, your ears, nose and throat are all connected in some way.
