Science says No: IUDs remain in the uterus and do not travel within the body:
The uterus is a closed space, preventing the IUD from entering the bloodstream.
Rarely, an IUD may shift but stays in the pelvic area.
You can check the strings for reassurance. However, if you cannot feel the strings, it does not necessarily mean the IUD is gone. They often simply tuck up into the cervical canal and are still effective but can be confirmed with a scan with your preferred gynae.
A IUD is considered a great contraceptive due to its:
✅99% effectiveness (comparable to permanent sterilization but reversible)
✅Options for non-hormonal (Copper) or hormonal (Mirena/Kyleena)
✅Longevity of 3 to 10 years.
Removal: In the rare event an IUD needs to be retrieved when strings aren't visible, a hysteroscopy (a minor procedure using a small camera) can be done to safely remove it.
Don't let fear deter you from this effective, convenient contraceptive option.
If you have questions , speak to your preferred gynaecologist.
