Are public awareness campaigns truly effective in getting women to attend breast screening?
Experience from Brazil suggests they are, as that country's "Pink October" campaign grew mammography screening volumes by up to 39%, a Brazilian study published September 9 in Public Health in Practice found.

Below are some suggestions as to how to keep it bright, colourful, happy and above all PINK
- Wear something pink daily in October – At the start of the month, hand out pink ribbons to everyone on your staff. Encourage them to wear it daily as a reminder and to keep conversation opportunities open about breast health.

- Hold a pink pumpkin contest – Combine Halloween activities into your awareness efforts by creating breast cancer awareness pumpkins. Display pumpkins in your practice.

- Breast cancer awareness bulletin board – Decorate a bulletin board in a highly-trafficked area. Keep it simple with facts or create a themed board to draw more attention.

- Collect scarves and hats – Take up a collection of scarves and hats to deliver to a local chemo center. Since many cancer patients lose their hair during treatment, a bright scarf or hat might make her day.

- Wrap a tree in your area in pink

- Light up outside areas with pink light bulbs

- Encourage pink creativity in your workspaces - spread awareness with your decorating skills.

- Encourage co-workers/patients/anyone to donate their loose change during October by filling up pink money banks strategically placed throughout the workspace. Donate the proceeds to a local breast cancer related charity at month end.

- Donate Your Hair - You can donate your hair to your local CANSA Care Centre: they turn human hair into wigs for medical patients battling hair loss

- Social Media Pink-Out - On October 1, change the colour of your website and social media accounts to incorporate the colour pink or pink ribbons. Go a step further and share breast cancer facts, statistics, resources, and self-check reminders for the next 31 days.

- Get involved in knitting Knitted Knockers – maybe even in pink! https://www.knittedknockers.co.za/
