Happy National Siamese Cat Day to one of the most iconic (and vocal!) feline breeds. 🐾

Known for their striking blue eyes, sleek coats, and larger-than-life personalities, Siamese cats aren’t shy about making themselves heard — and loved.

Whether they’re “talking” to you, following you around, or claiming your lap as their throne, life with a Siamese is never quiet… and never boring. 💙

Today is World Stray Animal Day — a moment to reflect on the countless animals still waiting for safety, care, and a place to call home. 🐾

Every stray has a story, and with a little compassion, that story can have a better ending. Whether it’s adopting, supporting a shelter, or simply raising awareness, each small act makes a difference.

💛 Because every four-legged soul deserves love, dignity, and a forever home.

Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is a genetic muscle disorder in horses that can be triggered by stress, exercise, or even anaesthesia. 🧬

While some horses may appear completely normal, an episode can escalate quickly — making awareness and preparation essential.

Knowing your horse’s genetic status can help you and your veterinarian make safer decisions, especially before procedures or breeding.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is a group of inherited eye disorders that cause gradual vision loss, eventually leading to blindness in dogs. One of the most common forms is prcd-PRA.

It often starts subtly —
🧬 Difficulty seeing in low light (night blindness)
🧬 Hesitation in unfamiliar spaces
🧬 Bumping into objects as vision worsens

Because it’s genetic, dogs can carry the mutation without showing signs — meaning it can quietly pass through generations.

🐾 Commonly affected breeds include:
Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Poodles (all sizes), Cocker Spaniels, Australian Shepherds, Dachshunds, and more.

💡 The good news?
With DNA testing, you can identify clear, carrier, or affected dogs — helping you make informed breeding decisions and protect future generations.

Happy International Puppy Day 🐶💛
There’s just something about puppies that makes everything feel a little lighter — the tiny paws, the clumsy zoomies, the way they somehow turn absolute chaos into pure joy.

Whether they’re stealing your socks, chewing on things they definitely shouldn’t, or falling asleep mid-play… life is simply better with a puppy in it.

Here’s to the little troublemakers who steal our hearts every single day.

Inbreeding is a natural part of genetics — but when it isn’t managed carefully, it can have real consequences for your pet’s health.

When closely related animals are bred together, there’s a higher chance that harmful recessive genes will pair up. This can increase the risk of inherited conditions, ongoing health issues, and a reduced quality of life.

💡 This doesn’t mean all inbreeding is bad — it means it needs to be understood and managed responsibly.

Responsible breeding focuses on:
✔️ Maintaining genetic diversity
✔️ Reducing the risk of inherited diseases
✔️ Prioritising long-term health and wellbeing

Genetic testing helps breeders make informed decisions — and helps give pets the best possible start in life 🐶🐱

Have you ever noticed how your dog suddenly appears the moment you’re feeling stressed or upset? 🐶

It might not just be coincidence. Research has shown that dogs can detect subtle chemical changes in human breath and sweat when we’re under stress. Their incredible noses can pick up these tiny scent shifts long before we even realise we’re feeling anxious ourselves.

That means your dog may literally be able to smell when you're having a bad day.

So the next time your dog insists on sitting closer than usual, resting their head on your lap, or following you around the house, they might just be responding to signals you didn’t even know you were sending.

Sometimes the best emotional support comes with four paws and a very powerful nose. 🐾

Ever noticed that most ginger cats seem to be boys? That’s not just a coincidence, it’s genetics! 🧬🐈

The gene responsible for orange fur (called the O gene) is located on the X chromosome. Since male cats have one X and one Y chromosome (XY), they only need one copy of the orange gene to have that iconic ginger coat.

Female cats, however, have two X chromosomes (XX). For a female to be fully orange, she needs the orange gene on both X chromosomes. If she only has one, she usually becomes a calico or tortoiseshell, showing a mix of orange and black fur due to a process called X-chromosome inactivation.

That’s why roughly 80% of orange cats are male, while female ginger cats are much less common.

So if you’ve got a ginger girl at home… genetics says she’s part of a very special club! 🧡

prcd-PRA (Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration) is one of the most common inherited eye conditions in dogs. It slowly damages the retina, often starting with night blindness before progressing to complete vision loss later in life.

The tricky part? Dogs carrying the mutation can look completely healthy while still passing the gene to their puppies.

A simple DNA test allows breeders and owners to determine whether a dog is:
- Clear – will not develop or pass on the mutation
- Carrier – healthy but can pass the gene to offspring
- Affected – at risk of developing the disease

With this information, breeders can make responsible breeding decisions and help reduce the risk of PRA in future generations.

🧬 prcd-PRA DNA Test: R549.87

Applicable to many breeds including:
Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Australian Cattle Dogs, American Cocker Spaniels, English Cocker Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers and many more.

Did you know some of your favourite dog breed features are written directly in their DNA? 🧬🐕

In this week’s quiz, we’re putting your dog knowledge to the test!
Can you match the breed to the genetic trait?

🔬 One gene gives certain breeds their adorable beard and eyebrows.
🔬 Another causes the deep wrinkles seen in some dogs.
🔬 And one famous mutation changes how bones grow, creating those signature short legs.

Genetics is more than just health testing — it’s also what makes every breed look unique!
