Foam fun to work on early literacy skills! 📝

Many homes keep a screen or music playing in the background all day. It can feel harmless because nobody is actively watching. Yet constant noise gives the brain very few chances to experience quiet and recover from ongoing stimulation.

Silence is not empty for the brain. Quiet moments help attention reset, thoughts organize, and emotions settle. They also train the mind to ignore distractions. Without enough quiet time, filtering sounds and staying focused can become harder over time.

Background audio keeps part of the brain alert. Even when ignored, changing voices, beats, and sudden sounds can pull attention in small ways. These repeated interruptions may create restlessness, shorter focus, and a constant need for fresh stimulation during tasks.

Children can be especially sensitive because their attention systems are still developing. If noise is always present, deep play, reading, problem solving, and imagination may become more difficult. The mind learns to expect input instead of creating focus from within.

Parents can help by building quiet spaces into the day. Turn devices off when not needed, lower noise during play, and protect moments without media. Silence is not missing something. It is where attention, calm, and deeper thinking grow strongest.

Time to meet Jolané Kotzé! 🌟

Jolané graduated from the University of Stellenbosch and completed her community service at 3 Military Hospital in Bloemfontein. Here she gained unique experience in treating adults with rare medical diagnoses, such as Guillain Barre Syndrome.

Jolané is the co-founder of Speak Unique Speech Therapy and our in-house guru when it comes to litercy, language and speech disorders. She specialises in evaluating and treating children with complex literacy, speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, ADHD and other syndromes and especially enjoys working with school-aged children.

She recently completed her training and internship to become a Dyslexia Diagnostician with the Stark Griffin Dyslexia Academy and is trained to diagnose and treat individuals with Dyslexia. Furthermore, Jolané is also an external lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Stellenbosch where she plays an active role in the training of students. Here her passion is supporting students in bridging the gap between theoretical training and real-world clinical experience.

When she is not at the practice or busy at clinical platforms, you will find her at home with her husband, 9-month-old son and two dogs. As a family, the Kotzés enjoy exploring markets, wine farms, parks and unique experiences the province has to offer.

Let's meet Danisa Dhaver-Chetty! 👋🏾

Danisa graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2016 and completed her community service year in 2017 at Catherine Booth Hospital. Her clinical interests lie in complex communication disorders, paediatric dysphagia, and supporting individuals with special needs, including those with ASD, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome. She is known for her calmness, and keeps our dramatics to a minimum 😉

Danisa is particularly passionate about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and plan to pursue advanced training in this area to further empower children and families in their communication journeys. She is our go-to for all things AAC and often utilises augmentative devices and systems to support language learning in sessions.

Originally from sunny KwaZulu-Natal, she balances her professional life with her personal roles as a wife and mother to a one-year-old. Beyond being a super Speechie, she also enjoys reading, writing, cooking, baking, nature walks, and swimming—activities that bring creativity, balance, and joy into her daily life.

Who's who in the zoo?!

Let's meet Jani Truter. She is our go-to for anything relating to breastfeeding, and a favourite among the little ones!

Jani grew up in Somerset West and qualified as a Speech-Language and Hearing Therapist in 2023 at Stellenbosch University. She completed her community service in the small rural town of Hartswater in the Northern Cape.

Jani has special love for working with young children and she is passionate about helping children unlock their full potential. She has a special interest in working with babies and supporting breastfeeding. Jani is currently completing her lactation certification (SACLC) to expand her skills in this area and support new moms.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, travelling, and being active. She also loves experimenting in the kitchen! It is not uncommon for her weekend news to include baking or hosting of some sort.

Jani is a firm believer that children teach us just as much as we teach them and their curiosity and unique way of seeing the world inspire her daily.

And here is our toy gift guide for 4-6 year olds. During this exciting phase, children's language starts to mature and we see them utilising these new-found skills in longer conversations, stories and while playing with others. This enables them to collaborate with friends using the same set of rules or play idea. The fun part about shopping for these little ones is that we can buy less concrete toys - they will find a way to turn it into magic!
