October is National Transport Month and a good reminder that safe driving starts with clear vision and good habits behind the wheel.

Tips for safe driving:

- Always wear your prescription eyewear when driving
- Ensure a clean windscreen free of scratches
- Decrease speed at night
- Don’t stare at oncoming headlights, look slightly left
- Visit an Optometrist regularly

Small steps like these protect your eyes and ultimately your safety on the road.

School Health Week is an important reminder of when children should have their first eye examination.

- The first exam should be at six months
- The next exam should be at three years
- At 5 or 6 years, just before school, is an important exam
- Thereafter, annual exams can be done
- The frequency will differ depending on the needs of the child

Regular eye exams ensure children can see clearly, learn with confidence, and thrive in the classroom.

Take care of your little ones and enjoy the weekend ahead 💙

Eye Care Awareness Month is from 21 September to 18 October highlighting important conditions like low vision.

Low vision occurs when spectacles, medicine or surgery can no longer improve sight. But help is still available as Optometrists can assist by providing magnifiers, telescopes and orientation training to improve daily life.

Caring for your eyes goes beyond glasses. Let us prioritise eye health and 💙

This School Health Week we are reminded how important it is to protect children’s vision.

Some symptoms that may indicate a vision problem in children include:

- Frequent blinking or rubbing of the eyes
- Head tilting or covering one eye
- Squinting or making the eyes smaller to see distant objects
- Discomfort when reading
- Headaches
- Copying incorrectly from the board
- A squint or misaligned eyes

The good news is that regular eye exams at an Optometrist can detect and solve vision related problems early, giving every child the best chance to succeed at school and beyond 💙

A corneal ulcer is more than just an eye irritation, it is a painful open sore on the cornea, the clear outer layer that protects your eye. This is a serious condition that needs prompt medical attention as untreated ulcers can lead to permanent vision loss.

Most corneal ulcers are caused by infections (bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic), but they can also result from severe dry eye, injury or autoimmune conditions. Common warning signs include eye pain, redness, sensitivity to light and blurred vision.

Treatment depends on the cause and often involves specialised eye drops along with medication to manage discomfort. If you ever notice these symptoms, it is important to seek care from an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist immediately 💙

From 13 to 18 October 2025 we observe School Health Week where we put the spotlight on the vision and wellbeing of our learners ✨

During this week schools will benefit from screenings, while teachers are trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of visual stress. Learners and parents will also receive vital information on device use and myopia control, alongside discussions about diet and the importance of outdoor activity 🚲

Vision is at the heart of education. By stressing the importance of regular eye health exams we can give every child the best chance to learn, grow and thrive 💙

Wishing you a Happy Monday and a fantastic new week ahead!
