Youth in the Western Cape are exposed to a high level of violence and trauma, which can occur in their communities, houses or at school. Many adolescents have been victims of violence and extreme traumas, while others have seen or witnessed these events. Traumatic experiences can have a devastating impact on young people, creating feelings of fear, sadness and helplessness. This can affect their performance at school, and their relationships with family and friends. Often if treatment is not provided, these difficulties can continue into adulthood. The Bathuthuzele Youth Stress Clinic is a specialized clinic which assists youth that have experienced such violence and trauma. The clinic is staffed by qualified psychologists and psychiatrists. We see adolescents aged 12-18 years old who have experienced or witnessed any type of violence or trauma. WHAT SERVICES DO WE PROVIDE?
1. Screening and assessments
2. Neuropsychology assessments
3. MRI scans
4. Basic Supportive Counselling & Parental Guidance

TYPES OF TRAUMA THAT AFFECT ADOLESCENTS
Trauma refers to events in which a persons life or physical safety is threatened. Examples include:

* Domestic violence - verbal or physical abuse in the home
* R**e & Sexual abuse
* School violence
* Gang violence (e.g. shootings etc)
* Criminal violence (e.g. armed robbery, house break ins)
* Car accidents

This project is approved by the Western Cape Department of Education. Letters and contact with the school can be arranged.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CERTIFICATES

We are also looking for youth between the ages of 12-18 years old that have not experienced any trauma to be controls for our study, they will attend 3 sessions including - an assessment, a neuropsychology assessment and an MRI scan. On completion of all 3 sessions they will receive a certificate providing them with recognition for their valuable contribution to community work.

This certificate is very helpful for adolescents CV's.

WHAT IS POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the name of a condition that is commonly found in people who have been a victim of, or witness to, an extreme trauma.

Youth with PTSD may experience the following:

- Feeling as if the event is happening again, through repeated thoughts, images, dreams, nightmares or flashbacks of the event

- Avoidance of people, places, things or conversations that remind them of the event

- Feeling irritable, outbursts of anger or increase in aggressive behaviour

- Very anxious, Easily startled or frightened by loud noises or sudden movements

- Lack of interest in usual activities, Poor concentration, Depressed mood, difficulty sleeping
