The Lands – Q: What is the value of working in the Lands?
Creative writing by current resident. T.K.

There is a reason all the new residents start in the lands; it provides a perfect environment for a man to build the basis for recovery. The farming activity needs a man to take responsibility that generates and sustains new life. The work is challenging and requires a level of focus and dedication that each man forgot they had. The work provides a sense of reward that is multi-faceted, and which shows each man that work for works sake bears much fruit: emotionally, cognitively, physically and spiritually. Upon entering recovery, that lands is an integral part of each mans healing, as he is given a purpose, the means to carry out the mission that empowers him, a clear vision defined by mature leadership and values inherent in the work he does and the manner by which he does it.

Dealing with disappointments in recovery -writing therapy assignment by current resident R.V.
“Addicts are the only people who expect things to always be perfect, without any ups and downs. I needed to realise things will not always go my way, and learn to be ok with that. Honest communication is something that really helps when you need guidance and help. Knowing that you can prepare for your future, but you cannot force anything into your life. You need to know that people, places and things will let you down from time to time, then you need to be your own support, you need to catch yourself.”

An important part of the recovery programme at Pelgrims Place is the care, maintenance and harvesting of our food gardens. We plant, grow and cook the produce we have, and the residents are part of the process. With guidance and shared information, they gain a sense of community, achieve a sense of accomplishment, and learn a great deal from this process.

The importance of having a comprehensive after-care plan – prt 2
(written by current resident C.J.)
“Through personalised agreements, it aims to create direction and safeguard against relapse by guiding the reintegration process into normal society. Considering that each person is different, the aftercare plan is tailor-made to fit all the needs of the person. This plan shows that in each of the stages of any possibility of relapse, there is always a choice to be made & a chance to reach out & ask for help. It creates a blueprint for taking away any possible excuse to relapse and is foundational in providing direction for a successful lifelong journey in recovery."

The importance of having a comprehensive after-care plan – part 1
(written by current resident C.J.)
“The importance of a comprehensive aftercare plan cannot be understated because after having completed a 12-step process, the work is not done. Confidence & justified pride in the completion of a program can result in subtle forms of denial that can undermine the work achieved through the program. The aftercare plan ensures that the 12th step is carried out through accountability to others, recognition of personal responsibility in acknowledgement of all possible triggers & the related coping mechanisms…”

Thoughts & emotions around the weekly phone call.
written by current resident D.W.

"A thought that always comes to mind for my weekly phone call is what my family are feeling. I see them holding brave faces; however, I don’t know how much is holding themselves together for me and how much is genuine excitement. I often feel isolated and lonely after a call with them, a portal into their loving embrace, only to be ripped away all too soon and then face reality alone again.

This may sound negative, but it has taught me a valuable lesson in taking sole responsibility for my life and actions. The emotions I experience are those of excitement before the call and a lingering sadness afterwards."

📢 Insights from Our Resident Nurse, Andre 📢

Yesterday, our incredible nurse led an insightful group discussion on a vital topic: the prevalence of eating disorders in addiction, often seen through cross-addiction.

It was a powerful session highlighting how intertwined these issues can be and the crucial role that better eating habits play in long-term recovery and overall well-being. Understanding this connection is key to holistic healing!

Big thanks to our nurse for sharing his expertise and fostering such an important conversation.

Our Story

Pelgrims Place is a male recovery centre based in Paternoster, WC. We are a centre built and run by Healing Wings, who have over 20 years experience in rehabilitating and helping people who have struggled with substance abuse and addiction. Because our centre strips away the pressures of the outside world, goes back to the fundamentals and basics of rehabilitation and uses our wealth of knowledge in therapy and recovery programs, we are able to offer our program at an incredibly affordable rate. Our program is a minimum of six months, as it is our belief that the most effective form of rehabilitation is long term. We believe everybody has the right to get the help they need and the ability to overcome addiction.
