Knee Pain

You may have experienced this at least once in your life. General ache in your knee cap, problems sitting for too long, or sore when you have to climb up and down stairs or squat down in exercise.

Causes of Knee Pain

There are a variety of causes where inflammation and injury can occur. Sports including repetitive jumping, sudden quad contraction when landing can cause some patellar tendinopathy. You may experience pain and swelling at the top of your shin and over your knee.
Movements like lunges, running, climbing stairs, may also irritate your knee. In the case of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, a general ache over the knee, the movement of the patella (knee cap) can cause irritation and pain in front of the knee. Usually caused by muscle imbalance, weakness, tight connective tissue or repetitive strain to the knee.

Non invasive Treatment of Knee Pain
Acupressure and Cupping Therapy can be useful treatment options for knee pain. The patellar tendon attaches to your quadriceps muscle and goes over your knee cap. Tension in the muscle belly and surrounding fascia in your quadriceps can cause the tendon to pull at the patella and cause pain. Treatment to the quadriceps and IT band can help relieve some of the tension, as well as stretching of the hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors. Modalities like cupping, myofascial release and Acupressure to the quad can also be very helpful.

The computer is a vital tool in many different jobs and activities, for adults and children. But long periods of using a computer can increase your chance of developing an injury. Inappropriate computer use can cause muscle and joint pain, overuse injuries of the shoulder, arm, wrist or hand, and eyestrain.

Tips to avoid muscle and joint problems :

-Have the computer monitor (screen) either at eye level or slightly lower.
-Have your keyboard at a height that lets your elbows rest comfortably at your sides. Your forearms should be roughly parallel with the floor and level with the keyboard.
-Adjust your chair so that your feet rest flat on the floor, or use a footstool.
-Use a comfortable chair that allows your spine to hold its natural curve while sitting.
-Use an ergonomic keyboard so that your hands and wrists are in a more natural position.
-Take frequent short breaks and go for a walk, or do stretching exercises at your desk. Stand often

If you already suffer from injuries caused by poor ergonomics, you may want to try natural healing therapies, to get your body back into balance, release muscle 'knots', and free yourself of pain.

Myofascial Release, Cupping Therapy, and Acupressure have shown amazing results is treating and preventing muscle pain, pinched nerves, headaches and eye pain caused by poor posture and ergonomics.

Just about everyone working in front of a computer for long hours, will at some point experience pain related to poor posture. If it happens to you, don't suffer...... Schedule an appointment

5 ways to Naturally Treat Lower Back Pain, Sciatica and Leg Pain.

80% of all people suffer with sciatica and lower back pain at least once in their lives.

Poor posture, incorrect lifting, sitting for long periods, obesity, and lack of exercise are some of the main causes of lower back pain and sciatica. Lower back pain and pressure on the sciatic nerve often leads to pain in various parts of the leg, as the sciatic nerve runs through the leg.

Here's 5 ways to treat and prevent lower back pain and sciatica

1. Lower back and hamstring stretches - this releases tension on the lower back reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve. Hamstrings become tight due to sitting for long periods. As the hamstring shortens, tension builds up in the lower back. Stretch regularly to prevent and treat the condition.

2. Ginger, Turmeric and Amla - These 3 super herbs combined in equal quantities help reduce pain, improve blood circulation and gets rid of inflammation. Mix 50g each of Ginger Powder, Turmeric Powder and Amla Powder. Store in an air tight container. Take one teaspoon of this herb mixture with a 1/4 glass of water twice a day.

3. Pressure point Massage - Spasms and Knots often form on the lower back and hamstrings. A trained pressure point therapist can locate and release these knots and spasms. At the clinic, i have often find that patients receive almost immediate relief after a single session, with complete relief after 2 or 3 follow up sessions.

4. Cupping Therapy - Cupping Therapy on the lower back draws more blood to the area. This helps relieve pressure on the lower back and legs. At the same time it treats any underlying muscle imbalance that may be causing your pain to worsen over time.

5. Hot and Cold Compress - Alternating hot and cold compress on the affected area allows the muscles to expand and contract without causing further damage. It forces blood into the tissues allowing lactic acid in the muscles to be broken down. Use a heat pack and an ice pack. Place heat for 3 to 5 minutes and immediately follow with an ice pack for 3 to 5 minute. Alternate the heat and cold for 20 to 30 minutes.

Please share this post to help friends and family who may be affected by this condition. Or contact me for an appointment for consult.

7 Remedies and Ayurvedic Treatment for Cervical Spondylosis, Neck and Back Pain

Cervical spondylosis or neck arthritis, is a common degenerative condition of the cervical spine that is most likely caused by age-related changes in the inter-vertebral discs. While it’s largely due to age, it can be caused by other factors as well. The pain is often found to radiate from the neck to one of the hands either right or left; and sometimes can be in both the hands.

Ayurvedic Understanding of Cervical Spondylosis

According to Ayurveda, Cervical Spondylosis is described as ‘Greeva graham’, a condition that is caused due to the vitiated ‘Vata’ dosha. Increase in Vata leads to depletion of body tissues, for an instance, with ageing Vata increases and body tissues start degenerating. The dryness and degeneration caused by Vata leads to decrease of Kapha Dosha that is responsible for cushioning in between bone joints. Thus, disc degeneration transpires which eventually leads to spondylosis.

Factors that cause Cervical Spondylosis according to Ayurveda

Age – Cervical spondylosis is a normal part of ageing.
Sedentary Lifestyle (Improper diet and no physical activity)
Bad food habits
Occupation – Having a job that requires heavy lifting or a lot of bending and twisting.
Recent Neck Injuries or Surgery
Genetic Factors – Family history of Spondylosis.
Being Overweight

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis according to Ayurveda and Naturopathy

Neck stiffness that gets worse over time
Tingling, numbness and weakness in your shoulders, arms, hands etc.
Pain during neck movements
Difficulty in writing, holding objects etc.
Muscle weakness
Difficulty in walking, lack of co-ordination
Management of Cervical Spondylosis through Ayurveda and Naturopathy

The Ayurvedic approach to the treatment of Cervical Spondylosis includes Ayurveda Vata pacifying herbs, Ayurveda recommended diet, lifestyle modifications, Ayurvedic therapies, stress management, yoga asanas and medications that help the body get back to state of balance and harmony.

Pressure point massage, Myofascial Release and Cupping Therapy help remove adhesions in the muscles and joints to increase range of motion and reduce pain.

Home Remedies to Manage Cervical Spondylosis according to Ayurveda and Naturopathy

Because of the strong anti-inflammatory properties, the below mentioned herbs and superfoods can act as the best medicines to manage the Cervical Spondylosis condition.

1. Castor Oil
Take one tablespoon of castor oil before going to bed, once or twice a week. This helps cleansing ama (toxins) and balancing vata.

2. Garlic
Eat a couple of raw garlic buds on an empty stomach each morning with water or you can heat 2 to 3 crushed garlic cloves in a pan with some vegetable oil. Allow it to cool, then use it to massage the painful area for 5 to 10 minutes. Follow this with a warm bath. Do this 2 times daily.

3. Turmeric
Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of milk. Heat it on low heat for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool, then add a little honey. Drink it 2 times daily.

3. Sesame Seeds
Apply some warm sesame oil on the affected area, Then apply a hot compress on the area. Do this 3 or 4 times daily.

4. Ginger
Drink ginger tea 3 times a day. To make the tea, boil 1 tablespoon of thinly sliced ginger in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain, add honey and drink it.

5. Cayenne Pepper
Mix together 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder and 2 tablespoons of lukewarm olive oil. Apply it on the affected area. Cover it with a cloth and leave it on for a few hours or overnight. Do this daily.

6. Exercise
One of the major causes of cervical spondylosis is lack of regular exercise. Therefore, you can reduce pain and stiffness around your neck and shoulders by incorporating regular physical exercise into your lifestyle.

7. Cupping Therapy and Massage.

Cupping therapy will improve the blood circulation to the area allowing the tissue to relax. It also aids in moving acid and inflammation build up. Pressure point massage, when done correctly, relieves much of the tension on the affect area and is one of the best treatments for the condition.

Please contact me to get rid of this nagging condition.

Neck Pain? Tight Shoulders?

Try this!!!

Acupressure for neck pain is a safe, simple and effective treatment that you can also perform on yourself at home to relieve pain and stiffness.
Heres my top three acupressure points to get rid of neck and shoulder pain naturally:

GB 20 (Wind Pool)
Location: On the back of the neck, at the base of the skull. Put your hands on the back of your head and use your thumbs to find the two depressions on the edge of the neck muscle, about 2 inches out from the midline.

Method: Put your hands on the back of your head and locate the points using your thumbs. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Use your thumbs to firmly but gently press up towards the skull. If the point is very tender, release the pressure slightly. Hold for 1-2 minutes while breathing deeply, then gently release

Benefits: Relieves neck pain, stiffness, inability to turn the head, shoulder pain, pinched nerve in shoulder, headache

GB 21 (Shoulder Well)
Location: On the shoulder, at the top of the trapezius muscle. The point is around halfway between the midpoint of the spine and the outermost bone of the shoulder.

Method: Rest the index, middle and ring fingers of your right hand on the left trapezius muscle, with the middle finger over the acupressure point in the center. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths then gently but firmly pull down on the point. Hold for 1-2 minutes then repeat on the opposite side.

Benefits: Relieves neck pain, stiffness, inability to raise the arm, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, pinched nerve in shoulder

UB 10 (Heavenly Pillar)
Location: On the back of the neck, on the outer edge of the trapezius muscle, around one finger width inwards and downwards from GB 20 (Wind Pool).

Method: Put your hands on the back of your head and use your thumbs to find the point. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Firmly but gently apply pressure with your thumbs. If the point is very tender, release the pressure slightly. Hold for 1-2 minutes while breathing deeply, then gently release.

Benefits: Relieves neck pain, stiffness, inability to turn the head, shoulder pain, upper back pain, headaches

Using these acupressure points daily, together with professional therapy can rid you of your pain for good!

9 Remarkable Benefits of Cupping Therapy

One of the primary treatment methods used at Maruthi Healing is Cupping Therapy. I have seen amazing results and still receive constant positive feedback from patients regarding cupping therapy.

Here are 9 benefits

1. Pain
Cupping targets soft tissue with pressure applied to pain points and areas of swelling. This helps to increase blood flow and give the tissues important nutrients and oxygen. It’s believed to help release tissues deep within the body, relax tense muscles and ease stiffness that’s often associated with neck and back pain, migraines and rheumatism. Practitioners use pressure along with heat and suctioning (and sometimes needles), near the site of the injury. This allows energy to flow along the meridians, or channels, which pass through the injury.

2. Relieve cold, cough and allergy symptoms
Cupping can help to stimulate the lungs (as well as other vital organs) to help clear out phlegm. Excess phlegm in the lungs triggers coughing to help bring it out of the body. The practice of cupping can help speed the process to relieve one of nasty cold, cough and allergy symptoms. It also helps boost immune function by moving blood and lymphatic fluid throughout the body.

3. Promotes relaxation
In today’s chaotic world, all of us can use a little time for relaxation. If we don’t take time to relax, the constant stress can lead to a host of health conditions, including mental issues like anxiety and depression. Similar to receiving a deep tissue massage which offers wonderful, relaxing relief, cupping is soothing as it helps to lift the pressure from tense muscles.

The act of simply lying still and allowing a practitioner to apply the therapy has positive effects on well-being, and believed to be another factor in why cupping is often so effective. After the cups are placed on the skin and suctioned, they generally remain for as long as 20 minutes, which basically forces one to be still and silent, putting them into a more relaxed state as it sedates the central nervous system.

4. Detoxifying

Poor circulation can lead to buildup of toxins inside of the body’s tissues. This buildup can be the root cause of many different health conditions. Cupping helps to improve stagnation, while the blood rushing to the area that’s being treated carries away toxins. Along with those toxins, it helps to clear dead cells and other debris. All of these elements are then expelled naturally. That’s why drinking lots of water after a cupping session is a good idea for flushing away those impurities and promoting better health.

5. Inducing inflammation to heal injuries faster
Inflammation is part of the body’s defense mechanism, which helps kick things into action to help heal illness and injury. If you suffer from a muscular injury, the first thing you probably do is rush to get an ice pack, but when it’s allowed to become inflamed, that actually helps to flood the injured muscle with blood, along with nutrients, platelets, white blood cells and fibroblasts to aid in healing. Cupping therapy works much the same way by drawing blood to the affected area so that new blood vessels can be created. It helps to heal knots and adhesions, which is why so many athletes have been turning to this therapy. It helps their body to recover faster from intense workout sessions.

6. Improve skin conditions
Cupping has been used to help with a host of skin conditions, including eliminating acne and eczema, reducing skin inflammation, lessening herpes breakouts and even diminishing cellulite. In the case of eczema, suction is applied on points on the body, such as the top end of the spinal cord, below the knee, or above the ankle. It’s used to treat acne by cupping the affected area and even nicking the skin in order to remove the breakout.

7. Relieving digestive disorders

Cupping is also becoming a popular practice for relieving symptoms of digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. It’s believed to work partly because of the stress-relieving effects of cupping, which has been strongly linked to healthier digestion.

Stress, tension and anxiety are all communicated to organs throughout the body, including digestive processes. When that happens, things start to get congested, and as a result, you feel bloated and constipated. Cupping releases the stagnation, helping to get things moving along, and relaxing you so that systems function normally again.

The therapy has been found to be effective for water retention, diarrhea, stomach cramps, gastritis, loss of appetite and a host of gastrointestinal diseases.

8. Anti-Aging
Cupping has been found to offer anti-aging effects like fighting wrinkles. It brings more nutrients to the skin, which helps give it a glowing, younger appearance. In addition, products that are used after the treatment, such as lotions, essential oils and such, are absorbed better, and therefore, more effective.

The lifting motion that comes with suctioning helps to reduce visible fine lines and wrinkles. It can even lessen the appearance of scars that are the result of injury or acne. The connecting tissues underneath facial skin are stimulated, helping to reduce smile and laugh lines, and, if you’re suffering from puffiness, it can help drain fluid in the lymph glands that result in reduced edema.

The massaging movements alone are known to help relax tense facial muscles, which results in younger, and even softer looking skin. Whether your skin is dry or oily, cupping can offer these outstanding aesthetic benefits. And, it’s all natural – no knives or lasers necessary.

9. Treating carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful, progressive condition that can interfere with hand strength and sensation, and even result in a decrease in hand function. It’s said to affect some 4 to 10 million individuals, with females three times more likely to suffer from it than males.

The condition disables a key nerve which results in symptoms that can range from mild numbness felt occasionally to hand weakness or even the loss of feeling and total loss of hand function.

The good news is that you may be able to find relief through cupping. A study out of Germany, published in The Journal of Pain, showed that the technique was effective for providing temporary relief of pain from carpal tunnel syndrome. Just a single session was able to significantly ease pain and symptoms for a week, according to the researchers.

The study authors noted three possible explanations for the positive therapeutic effects, including that the therapy may be providing a powerful placebo effect, cupping may offer antinociceptive effects, or the local bloodletting caused by cupping may have altered tissue perfusion and metabolism to affect medial nerve function.

There you have it, Thats just 9 of the benefits of cupping therapy.

Book your appointment today and experience the amazing benefits of cupping therapy.

Living with Chronic Pain.

1 in 5 people suffer from chronic pain. Yes, chronic pain is real!
Many sufferers that confide in me at the clinic are often met with friends and family telling them to "get over" the pain. Perhaps they mean well, maybe they don't know how to help you.

Heres 10 tips on dealing with chronic pain.
You may share them with friends and family that may be afflicted by this debilitating condition.

This list is by no means exhaustive and is not meant to diagnose and treat any condition. Its just a few methods used by my patients to deal with their condition. Always consult with your health care provider before starting a new treatment.

1. Fluid intake - most people affected by the condition are not consuming enough water. I don't need to tell you how important water is for the body. Chronic pain patients need enough hydration to flush the body of toxins and excess acid.

2. Exercise - although being in constant pain may restrict you from perfoming regular exercise, there is still a lot that you can do. Simple stretching, slow walks, yoga. This helps improve blood flow through the body, loosening up stiff muscles and joints.

3. Turmeric - The benefits of turmeric are endless. In this particular condition, it is known to reduce inflammation, raise the immune system, clear toxic build up and allow more mobility. A teaspoon of good quality turmeric in half a glass of warm milk with a bit honey, is an age old remedy for aches, pains and general vitality.

4. Ginger - Ginger aids chronic pain patients by improving circulation, raising the core temprature of the body, reducing perception of pain. Have ginger tea every evening to relax sore joints and muscles. Note: if you suffer from ulcers, colon disorders or have a fever - DO NOT consume ginger in large amounts.

5. Highly acidic foods - excess acid can worsen symptoms of chronic pain. Avoid foods high in acid. Tomato and canned foods are the main culprits. The use of Hing and bicarbonate soda in cooking can help reduce acid to an extent.

6. Regular Massage - massage has been used for thousands of years to reduce aches and pains, It relaxes the nervous system, promotes circulation, drains lymph and promotes muscles rejuvenation. Find a therapist thats right for you. They should be experienced in dealing with people with your symptoms. You should be aware that a small percentage of individuals undergo what is known as a "healing crisis", after a massage session. It is where the body feels worse before it actually feels good.

7. Keep a journal - documenting good days and bad days can help you cope better. If u experience a lot of pain on a particular day, make a note of what you have done on that day. Find the triggers for your pain so you can avoid them in the future. On that same note, if you have pain free days, make note of things done on that day. You could find something that helps you have more pain free days.

8. Emotions - emotions play a key role in dealing with pain. It directly affects the release of hormones in your body that could positively or negatively affect the perception of pain. Try doing things that make you happy to aid in the release of feel good hormones.

9. Myofascial Release - This is a specialized massage technique that directly affects the fascia of the body. I have found that my patients react positively to myofascial release therapy. It improves their range of motion and gets rid of muscle "knots". This allows for longer pain free periods.

10. Listen to your body - with so many things to see to, work, family, studies etc. We often forget to listen to our bodies. Chronic pain sufferers are usually people who were "busy bodies" before their symptoms set in. Aches and pains are usually a signal from your body telling you to slow down and relax for a moment. So listen to your body and take a break. You will go a lot further in accomplishing your tasks in the long run.

Are you or a loved one affected by chronic pain?
Please tell us how you manage your symptoms. What steps do you take to ensure more pain free days?

Please share this with as many people as possible. Follow this page for tips, advice and natural remedies. You may help someone get through their bad patch.

Reasons To Choose Natural Medicines

Science based natural medicines supported by published scientific literature are as effective and sometimes more effective than synthetic drugs.

There is far less likelihood of side effects from natural medicines

The human body function and mechanisms are more compatible with natural ingredients.

Natural medicines are eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable

The human species and natural source ingredients are part of nature's universe.

Generally people have a tendency to prefer natural medicines, they are happier if given the choice of a natural alternative.

From the earliest days of history, nature's ability to provide answers for human problems is proven. The challenge is to identify these natural resources.

The teachings of eminent physicians like Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the famous Greek herbalist , known as the father of pharmacy and the famous Ibni-Sina practioner of Unani Tib, they all document extensive use of natural remedies.

Numerous pharmaceuticals are developed (originally) from natural resources. Some of the most commonly used drugs like Aspirin, Morphine, a potent pain killer and the cholesterol drug Mevacor, the very first statin were all developed from natural sources.

Synthetic pharmaceuticals usually cause more side effects. The list of harmful or ineffective drugs continues to grow.

Maruthi Healing approaches healing in a natural way. Using natural medicines and natural therapies to allow the body to heal itself.

Please share to spread awareness.
