Turmeric, a culinary spice, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years.

Modern science has shown the inflammatory modulating effect and antioxidant advantages of curcumin, the natural active compound of turmeric.

A recent study has also shown that it may be comparable to omeprazole, a drug used to reduce excess stomach acid and treat indigestion. Something that so many people struggle with.

STUDY

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 206 patients (age 49.7±11.9 years; women 73.4%) were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to one of the three groups over 28 days.

Of the the 151 patients who completed the study, 49 were in the curcumin group taking two large 250 mg capsules of curcumin 4 x a day and one small dummy capsule; 49 in the omeprazole group taking one small 20 mg capsule daily and two large dummy capsules 4 x a day; and 53 in the combined treatment group taking curcumin plus omeprazole.

Patients in all three groups had similar clinical characteristics and indigestion scores at the start of the trial, and were reassessed after 28 days and then again after 56 days.

The result:

SODA (Severity of Dyspepsia Assessment) scores indicated significant reductions in symptom severity by day 28 for pain (−4.83, –5.46 and −6.22) and other symptoms (−2.22, –2.32, and −2.31) for those in the combined, curcumin alone, and omeprazole alone groups, respectively.

These improvements were even stronger after 56 days for pain (−7.19, –8.07 and −8.85, respectively) and other symptoms (−4.09, –4.12 and −3.71, respectively).

Researchers found that oral curcumin was safe and well tolerated, and that all patients experienced a similar improvement in symptoms. The new findings may justify taking curcumin in treating indigestion.
