In today’s fast-paced world there seems to be less and less time for fun and relaxation. It is normal to feel exhausted some of the time, but if you are feeling worn out and exhausted every day you may need to recharge your personal battery. Here are some ideas that may help you with this:

- GET MORE SLEEP. Most adults function their best when they get 7-9 hours or sleep. During sleep waste products are removed from the brain and sleep is also vital for “brain plasticity ”.

-TRY EAT MORE HEALTHY. This is often easier said than done but just making an effort to reduce your intake of sugar, eat less junk food and take out food and increase your intake of fruit, veg and water will go a long way.

- EXERCISE. Even if it’s just a 15min walk around the block everyday. Try get moving.

- PRIORITISE TIME TO SOMETHING FUN EVERY WEEK. Make time for the things that make you happy, even if it’s just once a week.

- SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Spend your free time with people that don’t judge you and who you can be yourself around. Those people that will be there for you when you fall.

-BE GRATEFUL. Always remember how blessed you are. So many people would kill to have your life and your problems. Starting your day by listing 3 things you are grateful for (in a journal or even just in your head) is a great way to practice gratitude every day.

-MEDIATE. Meditation has been proven to decrease stress and anxiety, increase attention, improve memory and decrease your risk of developing depression. Science has shown that after just 4 weeks of meditating for 15 min a day one can experience these benefits.

- PRAY. “ The only way to worry about nothing is to pray about everything “ … Unknown

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce that I will be taking a step back from private practice in order to spend more time with my two little ones.

I leave my patient’s in the very capable hands of Dr Peter Appelt and Dr Anje Van Der Merwe.

I will however continue to work at the practice as a Locum and I will hopefully still be able to keep in contact with my repeat patients who have blessed my life abundantly over the last few years.

Depression is a serious but treatable disorder that affects millions of people, from young to old and from all walks of life. It gets in the way of everyday life, causing pain and hurting not just those suffering from it but also impacting everyone around them. Coming from a strong background of treating mental illness and my further studies in psychiatry, I know all too well how this disorder can impact on those suffering from it as well as their loved ones. Please ensure that your loved ones suffering with this disorder are seen to by a health care provider to get them the care they need.
