Remember to bring your donation of personal care essentials this weekend when you visit Woodgrove Retirement Village - Mowana Open Village!

As Mowana serves older adults across the financial spectrum, including those who need help as they only have their Older Persons Grant to support them financially, the cost of toiletries is beyond what a number of Sunnyside Village residents can afford. So any contribution, whether in product or money will help us all give the beneficiaries a sense of dignity and comfort. We are looking to make up packs for 50 people.

For those who prefer to donate items:
Soap
Body lotions for men and women
Aqueous Cream
Roll-on deodorants for men and women
Toothpaste
Razors and blades for men
Talcum Powder
Shampoo
Conditioner
Cash Donations

Should you prefer to assist by making a cash donation, that is most welcome too!

Heritage Day at Howick West Service Centre

Mowana’s Service Centre in Howick West celebrated Heritage Day on 25th September 2025. Older adults attending the centre joyfully dressed in traditional attire from their respective cultural backgrounds to show pride in their heritage.

There was lots of merriment at the centre with traditional music, dance and the opportunity to learn about another’s cultural roots. Dolly Reddy, the manager of the centre and Sharon Durgha, the cook ensured that everyone partook in the activities and hot meals prepared. If there is one thing that unites us as a country, it is the sumptuous food.

Heritage Day is a reminder that we are all part of this marvellous tapestry called South Africa. It’s a day not just to celebrate our own heritage but also open our hearts and minds and embrace the diverse traditions and practices of our fellow South Africans. Mowana is pleased that our service centre in Howick West celebrates the diversity of its members promoting unity and understanding through sharing and learning.

World Alzheimer’s Day – 21st September 2025

September is dedicated as World Alzheimer's Month, and World Alzheimer’s Day is observed on 21st September each year. This year marks the 14th anniversary of this international campaign to raise dementia awareness and challenge stigmas and myths associated with the disorder.

The World Alzheimer’s Day theme this year is, “Ask about Dementia. Ask about Alzheimer's”. The theme focusses on encouraging meaningful discussions about dementia and Alzheimer’s to help overcome fear, anxiety and misconceptions. It also encourages those affected directly and indirectly by dementia to obtain information and engage with medical practitioners when the symptoms appear. The campaign aims to increase public awareness of these disorders and its impact on individuals, families, and communities by encouraging people to ask questions related to these disorders. Reducing stigma and myths such as ‘dementia is a normal part of ageing’ is a fundamental part of the campaign.

Research suggests that when individuals with dementia and their families are well prepared and supported, feelings of fear, disbelief, anxiety and anger are balanced by a sense of reassurance and empowerment.

Getting involved in the campaign does not have to be complex. If you or your loved one has been impacted by Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, simple initiatives such as sharing your experiences may help others feel less lonely and understood. Raising awareness on different social media platforms also helps promote the campaign and creates greater knowledge about the disorders.

Understanding how to respond to and support individuals with these disorders as well as their families is an important part of the campaign. There are many tips that can be accessed from online resources such as hashtag

Caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia is not just about tasks. It’s about making connection with the individual, it’s about promoting their dignity, and worth. It’s about listening with empathy and compassion. However, most importantly it’s about seeing the whole person through person-centred care, even when the memory fades. Mowana Communities NPC promotes the person directed support care approach in all their older persons facilities and recognises the unique needs, circumstances and preferences of all residents.

Mandela International Day Campaign - 18th July 2025
DONATIONS NEEDED PLEASE

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated on 18th July each year to shine light on the legacy of a man who was an international peacemaker and the first elected president of ’free’ South Africa. The theme for 2025 is "It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity." This theme emphasizes the power of individuals to make a positive impact on the world, particularly in addressing poverty and inequality. It also aligns with Mandela's vision of a better world for all, especially the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized groups in South Africa.

In keeping with the theme and the powerful message it conveys, the Community Services team at Mowana is working on putting together between 30 to 40 Care Packages for their needy community service users. To prepare these care packages donations are urgently needed. Your donation of the items listed below will help us help them.

Toiletries and Personal Hygiene Items Including:
Toiletry Bags, Bath Soap, Face Towels, Guest Towels, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Conditioner, Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline), Hand Lotion, Body Lotion and Emollient Creams.

Winter Warmers
Small items of clothing such as hats, beanies, socks, scarves and thermals.

For hygiene and safety reasons all donated items should be new and unused. Please donate with an open heart and giving spirit. Your generosity and kindness will greatly assist with this initiative.

All donated items can be left with our Community Services Team at Mowana Head Office, 94 Roberts Road, Clarendon or alternatively with Catileen Peter, Social Worker at Sunnyside Village, 57 Mbubu Road, Blackridge.
