Spiritual Oils and Their Significance
Deepa Jyothi worship is common in Hindu households. Lighting a lamp has a deep spiritual significance. As the light of the lamp destroys all ignorance, bestows knowledge, brings in auspiciousness, wealth, health and prosperity. It helps to burn away the negative tendencies in the mind and the sins of past lives. Verily, the light of the lamp is looked upon as the supreme Brahman, to whom salutations are made with sincere devotion and piety.

A mixture of neem oil and mahua oil helps to attract the grace of Goddess Parasakthi and Kula deivatas or family deities. It helps to increase wealth in the household.
Those who face problems from enemies should pray to Lord Bhairava on New Moon days or Krishna Ashtami with 8 lamps of neem oil and perform sahasranama archana to the Lord.
Castor Oil
For happy family life, growth, spiritual development, fame and prosperity, one has to light a lamp with castor oil. It also helps to bring good fortune from relatives.
Coconut Oil
Lighting a lamp with coconut oil attracts the blessings of Lord Ganesha. I t helps one get the blessings of family deities too and increases domestic happiness.
Mahua Oil
It attracts the blessings of Lord Shiva and frees one from all problems of debt and health problems too.
Panchadeepa Oil
To eliminate evil eye, negative thoughts, illness, poverty and for beneficial results of wealth, good fortune, health, happiness, lighting a lamp with Panchadeepa oil is a must.
It nullifies the evil vibrations at home and fills the atmosphere with highly positive vibrations.
It is mixture of sesame oil or coconut oil, castor oil, neem oil, mahua oil and cow`s ghee in the ratio of 3:2:1:2:2. It mitigates all evil and ensures prosperity and 8 forms of wealth. There is abundance of food and the household is happy. There is freedom from debts and all sorts of disharmony are removed.
To get rid of obstacles, fear and misery, one has to worship Lord Bhairava on Ashtami and New Moon days with panchadeepa oil lamps, offer red oleander flowers and perform the sahasranama archana.
For problems of health, one must pray to Lord Bhairava on Krishna Ashtami by lighting lamps of panchadeepa oil and do vibhuti abisekham to the Lord.
However, sunflower oil and groundnut oil should not be used for lighting lamps as it would increase debts and create financial difficulties.

This roadside stand represents everything my grandson and I have built together from nothing.

Three years ago, Jakob was heading down a dark path.

At 19, he'd dropped out of school, was struggling with depression, and spending his days locked in his room playing video games.

His parents were at their wit's end, and honestly, so was I. But I remembered how working in my garden as a child had saved me during my own difficult times.

I asked Jakob to help me expand my little vegetable plot behind the house. "Just for the summer," I told him. "Fresh air might do you good." He grumbled, but he came outside.

Slowly, something changed. He started asking questions about soil, about when to plant, about why certain vegetables grew better together. By the end of that first season, he was the one waking me up early to check on the tomatoes!

Now look at us! We've turned our small hobby into this beautiful roadside business. Something that we are able to share together.

Jakob handles all the growing and harvesting while I manage the sales and our customers. Every single vegetable you see here was grown with love on our little family farm.

What makes this even more special is how we've connected with other farmers. We sell pickled vegetables during the off-season, and the community of gardeners and makers has become like family to us. They understand that this isn't just about making money - it's about growing something meaningful together.

When neighbors stop to chat and buy our vegetables, they're not just supporting our little business. They're supporting Jakob's journey back to himself, and the bond between a grandmother and grandson who found their way to each other through dirt and seeds.

Every "hello" really does mean the world to us. And this time that we have to build a foundation together is something that will help Jacob determine the quality of life that he can invest in over the years to come.

Growing together has taken on an entirely new meaning for our family. Every day counts to these plants who need us to help them grow. And as it turns out, when we love and nurture other life forms, they nurture us too.

One of the most important principles in gardening is not to keep buying seeds every season. Ideally, you should only buy a variety once—and after that, keep saving seeds from your healthiest and best-producing plants.

Why is this important? Because seeds carry memory. When a plant grows in your garden and faces local conditions—heat, pests, soil quality, water stress—it adapts. All those experiences get packed into the seed’s DNA and are passed on to the next generation. So, when you grow a plant from your own saved seed, it comes back stronger, more resilient, and better adapted to your garden.

In contrast, seeds newly introduced from outside may struggle in their first season, needing time to adjust. But your own saved seeds are already in sync with your space—they thrive better and yield more.

So next time you grow something, start saving seeds. It’s a powerful step toward building a thriving and sustainable garden. 🌱
Let’s grow mindfully and preserve nature—one seed at a time. 💚

Today’s Pick: Growing Bottle Gourd – Lessons from My Garden 🍃🥒

Bottle gourd is one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables to grow, especially in southern India. It grows almost all through the year with minimal effort, provided we give it the right care and, most importantly, choose the right seeds.

In the initial years of my farming journey, I started off with desi or native seeds. The first few seasons gave me such a bumper harvest that I almost got irritated! The bottle gourds were coming in huge numbers and sizes—I remember feeling overwhelmed just by the task of distributing them to friends, relatives, and neighbors. I didn’t realize then that desi seeds are highly seasonal and that the right timing had played a major role in that successful yield.

Later, when I continued saving seeds but didn’t keep track of the season they belonged to, I ran into trouble. If you sow a desi summer variety in the rainy season or winter, the vines may look lush and healthy, but not a single gourd will appear. I learned this the hard way, after seeing only leaves and creepers spreading everywhere without a single fruit.

That’s when I understood how important it is to maintain a seed diary—just a simple notebook where I can record which season the seeds were harvested in and when they should be sown again. And if you’re purchasing desi seeds from a vendor, make sure to ask them about the sowing time or check if it’s mentioned on the packet.

Over time, as I struggled to find the right desi seeds or lost track of their timing, I gradually slowed down on growing bottle gourd. But this learning stayed with me, and I want to share it with all of you.

So here’s the takeaway:
If you’re choosing desi seeds (which I always recommend), treat them with care. Know their season, keep a record, and they’ll reward you with beautiful, healthy, homegrown gourds.
Do share this with gardening friends who are growing their food.💚☘️

NASA has classified Sansevieria, now called Dracaena, as an air purifier due to its ability to remove toxic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene.

This plant uses the acid metabolism of the Crassulaceae to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, enabling it to resist drought.

The microscopic pores on its leaves, called stomata, open only at night to limit water loss through transpiration in the heat of the sun. Unlike other plants, Sansevieria produces oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide at night, making it an excellent indoor air purifier while we sleep.
