We're so looking forward to seeing you at the Woodgrove Village Open Gardens Weekend taking place on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 October from 9.30 am to 4 pm.
There are six varied and beautiful gardens that offer a fascinating example of how small spaces can reflect the tastes and interests of the residents and at the same time, contribute to a peaceful and attractive environment.
The gardens on show are:
41 Conifer Drive. Home of Mrs Janet van Heerden. This is an attractive, English style cottage garden that features a clever mix of perennials, annuals in hanging baskets and standard roses. Behind the house, the secluded area is charming, with a potentially ugly steep bank hidden under a profusion of Dietes lilies – plants that will bloom throughout the summer and are predicted to forecast rain.
39 Conifer Drive. Home of Mrs Maureen Keane-Murphy. This is a similarly shaped garden, but designed in a different way. The front and side areas have a profusion of roses and also feature Barberton daisies. At the back, a beautifully shaped rough-skinned lemon tree is central to a bank which is covered in a variety of shrubs placed informally to create a peaceful and natural look. There are also many orchids – often a feature of Woodgrove gardens.
1 Wisteria Way. Home of Professor Mark Laing. This is a garden that has obviously been created by someone with a great love of plants and who understands how to combine perennials, annuals, exotics and indigenous varieties, making the best use of challenging soil. Again, many orchids grow in the trees as well as in pots. It is a garden that will make the most of seasonal changes. There is a bed for herbs, and a small area for miniature aloes.
The next three gardens flow into each other. 1 Hibiscus Lane. Home of Mr Malcolm Fauconnier; 2 Hibiscus Lane. Home of Mrs Empie Britz; 3 Hibiscus Lane. Home of Mrs Fay Steenkamp. Almost hidden from passers-by, these three gardens are all different, each designed to suit the preferences of the resident, but taken together they form a charming and secluded whole. At 1 Hibiscus Lane, raised beds with a profusion of colour and a variety of plants enable the owner to work in his garden at a comfortable height. Next door, a simple cottage garden offers a calm and secluded space, while the third garden concentrates on what can be grown successfully in containers, giving a glimpse into a different approach to creating a garden that suits the individual gardener.
A number of homes will be On Show, allowing you to see first hand just what sort of residences are available. You can also enjoy a gentle stroll through the estate enjoying the 18 hectares of parklike surrounds. At the Louis Sennet Centre there will be teas, delicious snacks and light lunches, and on Saturday morning a market, run by village residents.
The entrance fee is R20 per person and tickets will be on sale at the Woodgrove Village Gate. As this is a fundraiser for Sunnyside Village - Mowana all profits will go to assisting residents with toiletries. Entrance fee and the market will be cash only – no cards.
