✨ A Story of Courage, Compassion and Collaboration ✨

At 88 years old, Mrs. T. Cele has walked a journey of resilience that deeply moved everyone at Midlands Specialist Private Hospital.

Our first encounter with her dates back to 2023, when she was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea and a multinodular goitre compressing her trachea. With the support of her daughter Phindile and the expert guidance of one of our resident Specialist Physicians, Dr. S. Sewgoolam, she managed well with CPAP therapy, and her family chose a conservative path given her age.

But in June this year, Mrs. Cele returned to us with cardiac complications and dangerously high carbon dioxide levels. What was expected to be a short admission soon became a 4-month ICU journey that tested every ounce of her strength β€” and the dedication of her care team.

Within the first week, she required invasive ventilation. With the expertise of Dr. D. Surajlal, she was successfully extubated after 32 days on the ventilator. What followed was a slow but determined climb back to independence:

- Thasveer, Physiotherapist, worked tirelessly to restore her mobility, starting with just sitting up in bed.
- Tanner, Occupational Therapist, guided her daily towards regaining function.
- Taskeen, Speech Therapist, gently retrained her swallow, ensuring she could sip water safely once again.
- And every single nurse at MSPH cared for her with vigilance and compassion β€” preventing complications, administering medication, and never allowing her spirit to be dimmed.

Through it all, Mrs. Cele’s courage and fighting spirit inspired us all. Every smile, every lifted hand, every small victory became a beacon of hope.

Yesterday, 3 October 2025, we celebrated the moment she finally went home β€” a testament to the power of teamwork, expertise, and above all, the human will to overcome.

From doctors and allied health professionals to our nurses, this was not just medicine at work β€” it was love, science, and perseverance coming together. πŸ’™

πŸ’– Celebrating World Heart Day πŸ’–

Earlier this week, we celebrated World Heart Day by coming together to learn, share and enjoy a few special moments.

With the support of Zen Medical, Biotronik, Medtronic, and Planet Fitness, our staff explored the latest innovations in cardiac care β€” all while enjoying delicious treats, a heart-shaped cake, and freshly brewed coffee courtesy of Mvelachinno Barista Services brought in by Zen β˜•οΈ

As a reminder, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally β€” yet many risk factors are preventable or manageable. Regular blood pressure checks, cholesterol monitoring, blood sugar screening, and early consultation with a healthcare professional for any symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or unexplained fatigue are critical to protecting your heart. Prevention, early detection, and timely intervention truly save lives.

September is Pharmacy Month β€” and we celebrated in full force!

From brain-teasing daily quizzes and puzzles with lucky winners, to an exciting Amazing Race: Hospital Edition and a heartwarming Cuppa for CANSA bake sale β€” it was a month filled with fun, purpose, and connection.

This Pharmacy Month, our focus was clear: Pharmacy is not just seen, it’s felt.

An essential, behind-the-scenes force at every hospital β€” supporting patients, teams, and the entire healthcare system every step of the way. πŸ’Šβ€οΈ

🌟 Spring into Appreciation! 🌟

This September, we celebrated our incredible team with a Build-Your-Own Hotdog Day – a fun-filled moment of gratitude in full bloom for the stars behind our success!

From securing Diamond Status Certification with the WSO Angels Initiative πŸ’Ž to earning us a nomination for the Best of PMB and the Midlands Awards, none of it would be possible without the dedication, passion, and excellence of our staff.

With Women’s Day celebrated just the week before, followed by Administrative Professionals Day in the same week, it was truly a week of celebrations all around. This day was all about saying THANK YOU to every hand and heart that keeps us moving forward.
