What is HPV & how it causes cervical and vulvar cancer:

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a very common virus passed through skin-to-skin contact including intimate contact.

Most people will get HPV at some point — and in most cases, the body clears it on its own.

Some high-risk types of HPV, if left untreated, can cause changes in cervical and vulval cells over time. These changes may develop into cancer, often without symptoms at first.

This is why prevention, cervical screening and early diagnosis is so important.

More than 660,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year.

Global data shows that women in low and middle income countries carry the greatest burden of this disease, largely because access to screening, prevention and treatment is still limited. This is a serious inequality, especially since cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when found early.

International initiatives such as IGCS are working to reduce these gaps by improving specialist training, strengthening healthcare systems and supporting clinicians who care for women every day.

With awareness, screening and early treatment, we can change outcomes and save lives.

Happy New Year!

The start of another year reminds us that the global strategy set forth by the WHO to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health burden by 2030 is fast approaching.

Good thing January is . All month, we plan to share key facts and inspirational stories to keep these targets top of mind as we make our new year resolutions.

First, let’s be reminded that IGCS programs and members are dedicated to advancing progress in each of the three targets of elimination:

🎯 Prevention – Public awareness and vaccination against HPV
🎯 Screening to detect early signs and treatment of precancerous lesions
🎯 Treatment, including life-saving therapies and palliative care to reduce suffering for those diagnosed with advanced disease.

We KNOW you are committed to the cause. No one can achieve elimination alone, but our combined efforts can make 2026 a year of major milestones and progress across the globe!

What will you prioritize this year to move the world closer to ?
