Today, as Cape Town experienced temperatures above 40°C, a GMSRS Site-Based Medic based at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company responded to a serious heat-related emergency on Platteklip Gorge.
Although the incident fell outside our official site responsibility, our medic was the closest advanced medical provider and immediately went to assist.
The patient was critically ill and required urgent evacuation. Our Emergency Operations Centre coordinated with Western Cape DOH EMS, who dispatched specialised Wilderness Search and Rescue medics and the Air Mercy Service helicopter.
Thanks to the combined efforts of:
• Western Cape DOH EMS
• Wilderness Search And Rescue WSAR Western Cape
• South African National Parks
• Air Mercy Service (AMS)
• Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
the patient was stabilised and safely extracted from the mountain.
This serves as an important reminder that extreme heat on Table Mountain can quickly become dangerous.
