Today, as Cape Town experienced temperatures above 40°C, a GMSRS Site-Based Medic based at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company responded to a serious heat-related emergency on Platteklip Gorge.

Although the incident fell outside our official site responsibility, our medic was the closest advanced medical provider and immediately went to assist.

The patient was critically ill and required urgent evacuation. Our Emergency Operations Centre coordinated with Western Cape DOH EMS, who dispatched specialised Wilderness Search and Rescue medics and the Air Mercy Service helicopter.

Thanks to the combined efforts of:
• Western Cape DOH EMS
• Wilderness Search And Rescue WSAR Western Cape
• South African National Parks
• Air Mercy Service (AMS)
• Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

the patient was stabilised and safely extracted from the mountain.

This serves as an important reminder that extreme heat on Table Mountain can quickly become dangerous.

If hiking:
✔ Start early
✔ Carry sufficient water
✔ Monitor conditions
✔ Know the emergency number 021 937 0300 (Western Cape, South Africa)
✔ Turn back if you feel unwell

In the early hours of Thursday morning, 12 February 2026, Medevac 04 successfully completed its first night maritime medical evacuation off the coast of Cape Town.

Activated at 22h59 on 11th Feb 2026, the GMSRS Emergency Operations Centre mobilised the AS365 N2 Dauphin helicopter, callsign Medevac 04, in partnership with Cape Town Helicopters following a medical emergency aboard a Roll-on/Roll-Off vessel at sea.

After coordination with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Port Health, Department of Health medical officers, shipping agents and insurers, the aircraft departed at 03h18 and conducted a precision night hoist approximately 10 nautical miles west of Green Point.

The patient was assessed and stabilised onboard before being safely hoisted into the aircraft and transferred to hospital in a stable condition.

This mission marks Medevac 04’s first live night maritime evacuation and highlights the strength of coordinated maritime rescue capability in the Western Cape.

Our sincere thanks to all authorities and stakeholders involved for their swift and professional cooperation.

We are proud to announce the formal launch of an integrated aeromedical and search and rescue capability between Global Medical Safety & Risk Solutions (GMSRS), through our Medevac Africa division, and Cape Town Helicopters (CTH).

This partnership brings together GMSRS’s clinical governance, specialist rescue capability, and topside operational coordination with CTH’s aviation expertise and rotary wing platforms, enabling a unified response across offshore, coastal, and remote inland environments.

To mark the collaboration, we recently hosted a stakeholder open day, providing clients and partners with insight into how aviation, medical, and rescue disciplines integrate to support complex aeromedical and SAR missions.

The partnership is supported by formal operational frameworks aligned with the Department of Transport and the South African Search and Rescue Organisation (SASAR), ensuring coordination with both the ARCC and MRCC when required.

We would like to thank all partners and stakeholders who joined us and continue to support the development of a resilient, interoperable aeromedical and SAR capability in South Africa.
