A BIG THANK YOU to all of those people who assisted in getting Rinus off the streets and into Twin Rivers Rehab for residential treatment.
A highly impressive collaborative effort by ex-clients and Twin Rivers Consultants.
Its never an easy process helping a homeless addict but the situation was definitely made a easier due to Rinus's cooperation and inner drive for a better life.
Rinus was addicted to m**h and cannabis and suffered intermittent psychosis. Whilst still living on the streets and with counselling support Rinus managed to stop using m**h and was open to taking anti-psychotic medication which was administered and supervised by a medical professional.
Its a wonderful story and 'Twin Rivers Dragonfly Foundation' is proud to be a part of creating opportunities for those who firmly believed that no one cared!
I personally relate strongly to Rinus and I was also fortunate enough to receive sponsored residential treatment 26 years ago!

Unfortunately, the pandemic has not improved the amount of illegal rehabs and 'therapists' operating unregistered recovery programmes across South Africa and in many other countries too.
It is mind-blowing the amount of 'services' on offer online as well, and many of these are not professionally registered with any governing body.
The online platform has become a free-for-all attracting all kinds of 'loose cannons' who are simply taking full advantage of a vulnerable situation!

Opportunities During The Pandemic!

Whilst global curves are flattening, I see this as a great opportunity to build new alliances and create a 'new norm' regarding addiction and mental health client services, especially for those with limited funding but not exclusively.
I would like to build a working relationship with a professional like yourself who can not only arrange client referrals to Twin Rivers but be part of a partnership with Twin Rivers creating 'recovery packages' that include secondary care or aftercare in the client’s home area.
The need for professional residential treatment is rapidly increasing and once International travel is more stable there will be thousands of clients looking for effective care at a realistic cost.

Codependency Worsens During Pandemic!

Codependency Symptoms:
*Low self-esteem, feelings of shame, and worthlessness
*A need to save others and having a duty to protect their loved ones from all harm
*Self-denial and prioritising others’ needs over their own
*Being responsible for others’ happiness, having hard times saying “no”
*People pleasing and overwhelming desire for others’ acceptance
*Painful emotions such as anxiety, fear of being judged, rejected, or abandoned

People generally get 'over-involved' or isolate as a way of coping during challenging times! Over-involvement is a codependency issue often leaving the person feeling unfulfilled-resentful and angry.

The Pandemic Continues To Disrupt Recovery!

Quantity rather than quality seems to be increasing when it comes to choosing a rehab for an addict. People are seeking long-term rehab at short term costs!
What is even worse is that clients with severe Dual Diagnosis are also being admitted into unregistered rehabs and being 'counselled' by unqualified people, many of whom are recently into recovery themselves! Scarily enough, some of these rehabs are Christian based but the clients are NOT treated in a Christian way!
Due to the global pandemic many professional addiction and mental health rehabs will not survive and the unscrupulous will take over! THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND!

Addiction and Suicidal Feelings

The impact of such extreme changes to life and life style is having a disastrous effect on mental health everywhere and creating levels of denial-avoidance and other 'coping' mechanisms that have not been used on such a large scale since war time!
Suicidal feelings are very genuine dark thoughts that can invade anyone's mind, no matter how strong they or others believe themselves to be!
Silently and sometimes unnoticed a persons mental health can deteriorate fairly quickly exacerbated by the challenge of a highly unstable future. Some people had un-diagnosed underlying mental health issues such as dysthimia which is a low grade persistent depression that could develop into a chronically debilitating depression in a short space of time!
Thinking that mental health is a severe/visible ailment only is a common misconception affording people to embrace
'them and us' thinking!
Denial surrounding mental health is a mental health issue on its own!
