These are the 4 skin care essentials for normal combination skin in my books☺️

Make sure you’re on them!

There are some skin conditions where things change a little:
My acne patients often have some salicylic acid in their routines.
My rosacea patients are often on barrier skin products alone.
My pigment patients are also on tyrosinase inhibitors.

Come see me if you can’t get your routine right! It’s an overwhelming world of skin products but one’s routine can still be pretty simple😉

Paediatric Eczema

‘The itch that rashes’

👶🏻Paediatric eczema, most commonly known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed patches of skin in infants and children.
👶🏻Affecting roughly 10% to 20% of children worldwide, it is often referred to as “the itch that rashes” because intense itching usually leads to scratching, which further inflames the skin.

What can you do if you observe this rash in your little one?
- Short luke warm baths, clean only with epizone e or pure glycerine soap
- Use a barrier cream twice a day (epizone e or epimax oatmeal work well)
- If mild creams like protopic or elidel will be scripted by your Doc to use on hot spots or facial areas
- If moderate to severe creams like dovate will be used
- Try and identify the trigger in your child - dry skin, heat, animal dander, dust mites, cleaning detergents, clothing materials, food groups.
- Remember these rashes can become infected so if any signs of infection arise be sure to bring your kiddie in to see us as sometimes topical antibiotics are required

Here are some must have (and low down time) treatments for the eye are😉
👁️Botulinum toxin for the lateral and inferior crows feet. This relaxes the Orbicularis oculi muscle therefore reducing the lines over time. This is done every 3-4 months
👁️Peri-ocular biostimulators (polynucleotides) or skin boosters like NCTF or PRP. These are used to improve the skin condition, increase collagen and reduce pigmentation around the eye. This is done every 3 months
👁️Tixel skin tightening for the upper and lower eyelid skin. When this becomes too excessive then our Plastic surgeon takes over with a bleph😉
👁️Peri-ocular peels should be done with every peel or facial you do. Yes we have these just for the eye area🙌
👁️And don’t forget a good eye product. These won’t perform miracles alone but if used from a young age they help to support and protect the skin
*My favourite is still Neostrata intensive eye therapy☺️

This is a beautiful example of evidence based medicine and science in action: The Heart Lung Machine🙌❤️

During Cardiac bypass surgery the heart lung machine temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs, allowing surgeons to operate on a still, blood free heart, while still maintaining oxygen flow to the rest of the body🤯

This is the reason I love conventional evidence based medicine. It has truly been life saving over time. And doctors like Christiaan Barnard were truly instrumental in this field of medicine in SA🇿🇦

If you stop and think of your family line and where it was prolonged due to medical intervention you’ll realize that you probably wouldn’t be here without it. I know I sure wouldn’t! ❤️

A demanding career but rewarding for sure☺️

‘Hype’ being the key word.

We support the use of FDA approved peptides, the likes of Mounjaro, Saxenda etc in the right patient when clinically indicated. These can work really well and have multiple health benefits.

The problem regarding peptides is the non FDA approved variants. It is important (to me for one) to note that the majority of ‘peptides’ circulating in the wellness circles have limited to no significant humans trials behind their use in humans.

Don’t trust blindly. Ask for the clinical trials. Know what makes a clinical trial significant. Ask for the side effect profile, short and long term. If it is unknown, don’t take it.

Most of us are aware of the classic clinically pigmented melanoma but in 2-10% of cases we see what we call ‘amelanocytic or hypomelanocytic’ melanoma. This simply means little or no pigment.

This is important to know as these melanomas can be missed or mistaken for benign skin lesions and as a result come with a delay in diagnosis.

Lesions present as pink or red patches or nodules with well defined borders.

In light of the above this is why we recommend annual top to toe skin checks.

In my practice when a skin lesion is persistent, growing or in any way atypical it gets a punch or excision biopsy. This is a quick and easy way to diagnose lesions that we don’t want to be missing.

The technique shown here utilizes the revolutionary nano soft needle which leaves small blebs that settle within a few hours, with little to no bruising.

At my practice I inject a combination of NCTF, PRP and polynucleotides under the eyes.

NCTF and PRP are injected every 3 months, whereas polynucleotides are initially injected every 2 weeks for 4 sessions and then 6 monthly.

All of the above help with fine lines, pigmentation, collagen stimulation and skin quality.

Remember botulinum toxin and filler alone are limited in the tear trough area. If it’s an area of concern for you then you should be looking at periorbital meso☺️

Bottom line:
Natural is not a biological term. It is a marketing shorthand.
The question should not be whether something is ‘natural’ or not. It should be ‘How does it behave in tissues, when injected or when ingested?’

In a word full of ‘natural’ remedies which can in some circumstances be effective, they often lack rigorous scientific testing for safety and dosage. So it is no surprise that we see many adverse events in relation to seemingly harmless ‘natural’ products.

Take home message:
Before you drink any tablet, get any IV drip or apply any topical product, make sure you know what is in it and what the possible adverse effects are. If your medical professional can’t tell you about its testing then it simply wasn’t done.
