Twin Rivers Recovery

Twin Rivers Recovery Twin Rivers Recovery Centre is a licensed, independent, family-owned treatment facility dedicated to ethical, client-centred care.

The International clinical team here at Twin Rivers will be doing everything possible to help you to break free of addiction. We provide you with a safe environment, the best resources, and daily support, but only you, at the end of the day can make this essential transformation happen. The truth is that we cannot guarantee your success, but the good news is you can! Here are 5 tips so you can mak

e Twin Rivers Recovery Programme work for you:

1. Get Rid of Any Ambivalence You Might Have Towards Alcohol or Drug Abuse
“Half measures availed us nothing” - Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book

If you are ambivalent towards recovery, it means you are not fully committed to this new way of living. This would be the case if you believe that by staying sober for a certain amount of time is going to mean you will be able to use alcohol or abuse drugs again successfully! If you want to enjoy a good life in sobriety you need to let go of this desire to drink or use drugs again completely. It is only then that you will be able to fully commit to the Twin Rivers recovery programme.

2. Understand the Importance and Power of Humility
“My best thinking got me here” - Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book

The fact that you have become addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, s*x, po*******hy or are codependent doesn’t mean you are a bad person, you are unwell! You have developed unhelpful and destructive patterns of thinking that need to be addressed. If you enter Twin Rivers with an arrogant attitude; that you already have all the answers then you will undoubtedly fail. In order to succeed you need to develop enough humility to become and remain teachable on a daily basis. Humility – ‘the quality of having a modest or low view of one's own importance’

3. Take Responsibility for Getting the Most Out of the Twin Rivers Recovery Programme

The Twin Rivers treatment is not a passive experience. All the resources you need to succeed are here, but are worthless unless you make use of them all. This is your life that’s in serious trouble, so you do need to take responsibility for your sobriety-one day at a time! Addiction has led your mind and body to become lethargic and lazy, but you need to overcome this and take charge. Twin Rivers can only help those who are willing to help themselves, take responsibility and try something new by asking for HELP!

4. Have Some Faith in the Power of Recovery

Getting sober requires a leap of faith, and unfortunately this is why many clients choose to stay miserable and in denial. You don’t know for sure what is going to happen when you give up addiction, so you need to have some faith that it is going to mean a better quality of life. You already have some insight in that doing the wrong things in life leads to pain and suffering, so it certainly isn’t entirely unreasonable to believe the opposite exists! Blind faith is required at the beginning of your journey, we invite you to trust the process-take the cotton wool out of your ears and LISTEN to what is on offer!

5. Be Willing to Do Whatever it Takes

The secret of those who have managed to develop a long-lasting sobriety is that they became willing to do whatever it takes; they have gone to any lengths to grow and maintain their recovery. This level of determination can turn you into an unstoppable and positive force. This approach can allow you to get the most out of the whole Twin Rivers recovery process and beyond. It involves letting go of all the ‘excuses’ for why you can’t succeed and instead focusing on what can help you to succeed and improve your quality of life rather than focusing on revenge, anger and blame.

Twin Rivers Recovery Trauma Treatment 2026

“One of the biggest mistakes in trauma treatment is trying to fix trauma too quickly.”

Healing cannot happen under pressure!

Trauma healing is not about immediately revisiting painful memories, neither is it about completely ignoring them! Sometimes there’s a strong push in treatment centres to work through trauma with limited attention given to the client’s nervous system which could be frozen and numb (Hypo-arousal) or is in a state of Hyper-arousal (anxious, angry, reactive).

Yes, there are a number of therapeutic processes that can be carried out when it comes to helping a client suffering from traumatic experiences but there are other important, basic elements that mustn’t be overlooked so as the client can stabilize and gradually pull away from destructive patterns of thinking and behaving. Gentle, compassionate supportive persistence can dilute resistance.

The Quiet Side of Trauma Treatment

Recovery community support starts with the treatment clinical team. Personal traumas and the vicarious nature of working with ‘impacted’ clients must be regularly addressed through supervision and staff training. To be trauma informed positively impacts clinical team cohesion which quietly reassures and holds clients in their new and unfamiliar setting…………

Common Obstacles That Block Recovery

‘I am aware that I might have a problem but recovery must be on my terms’

Quick Fix Expectations!

The majority of the world’s population is immersed in a lifestyle that is fast, furious and all consuming. This frenetic approach to life negatively impacts the way we think, feel and behave, creating unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others.
When it comes to addiction and mental health recovery, many of us are drawn to seeking a ‘quick fix’ so as we can jump back on the same hamster wheel that was contributing to our unmanageable and chaotic lifestyle in the first place.

Arrogance-Fear & Denial

Addicts can barely manage their own lives and yet desperately try to manage their own treatment admission believing that a brief intervention will get them back on track. Unfortunately, addicts and those suffering with grave mental health disorders have no real concept of just how serious their situation actually is. Selective fantasy-based thinking, justification, self-negotiation, decision fatigue, delusion, naivety, fear-based arrogance, anxiety surrounding loss of a job or relationship, fear of behavioural exposure and the need to control are some of the denial ingredients that hamper an addict’s initial treatment admission process.......

What is Screen Addiction?

Screen addiction is the excessive use of smart phones, computers and tablets. People of all ages are preoccupied and fixated with screen watching and scrolling which anesthetises boredom and a general sense of worldly disconnect. Dopamine (the feel-good hormone in the brain) is activated by a contrived sense of reality brought about by feeling a sense of worth and control through loose associations with profiles, stories and videos posted and general social media interaction. The temporary sense of power and control is addictive and repeated screen use contributes towards deteriorating mental and physical health. Dishonesty regarding screen watching is very common and withdrawal symptoms can cause anxiety, anger, restlessness, irritability, eye strain, neck and back pain and can negatively impact time keeping and create poor sleeping patterns.

Doom scrolling
This is when a person spends many hours watching and absorbing large amounts of depressing, sad or negative news on social media and various websites including the ‘dark web’. This is also known as Information Seeking Addiction. Even when a level of discomfort is involved the scroller may find it difficult to stop scrolling, negatively impacting their mental health...….

Recovery Post Residential Treatment
What is early recovery?

A much-debated topic but it is certainly not just a few months. The most popular approach is that early recovery is the first five years. Should a recovering person approach their recovery in a realistic and holistic fashion they will come to understand that this is a realistic time scale. To change an addict’s world view, which is very distorted in the beginning to one that is based on reality, self-respect and responsibility takes a long time and requires constant maintenance.

Halfway House

Many recovering addicts and alcoholics move into a halfway house after residential treatment which in most cases is probably wise. Halfway House living can be costly and in South Africa health insurance might cover sessions with a psychologist and a psychiatrist but not the monthly rent.

Halfway Houses vary regarding standards of client care so its worth shopping around to find out what you are paying for. ‘Sober Living’ is basically a ‘dry’ house that rents out rooms and rarely offers counselling support. A Halfway House is..........

Codependency-A Second-hand Life
Extreme Emotional Reliance on Another Person

Codependence is a set of maladaptive, compulsive behaviours learned by family members in order to survive in a non-expressive family that carries a lot of historical and more recent emotional pain. This emotional pain negatively impacts the family’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours (personality) to such a degree that healthy, meaningful communication becomes a rare event. Discussing feelings are normally avoided at all costs as can lead to arguments and each family member develops a role within the family system that supports their personal ‘survival mode’.

Survival Mode
There are quite a few different roles that develop in a dysfunctional family system that are underpinned by people pleasing, compliant, victim-based attitudes and behaviours and controlling roles fuelled by passive-aggressive, unpredictable attitudes and behaviours that ensures that the family stays stuck and oppressed, blocking family and personal growth. These hardened, seemingly immoveable traits are usually present outside of the family system as well. Interestingly enough a family member can be compliant at the work place and controlling at home and vice versa.

Twin Rivers Recovery
Integrity in Addiction Treatment

Over the past three decades working in the field of addiction and mental health, I’ve seen and heard so much from staff, clients and their families and have learnt that Twin Rivers Recovery doesn’t just provide a safe space for therapy, we also carry a profound responsibility in implementing realistic and attainable policies and procedures that protect staff and clients alike.

People arrive at Twin Rivers Recovery often frightened, exhausted, and vulnerable. Families place enormous trust in Twin Rivers Recovery programmes tasked with guiding their loved ones through some of the most challenging periods of their troubled lives.
That trust must never be taken lightly.

As a licensed treatment provider Twin Rivers Recovery takes the following very seriously: -
• Client safety that includes stringent rules and regulations required for a mixed gender-based community.
• Clear and consistent boundaries that includes a non-punitive warning system that promotes personal growth.
• Individualised care is paramount at Twin Rivers Recovery and easier to manage as we work with a maximum of 12 clients at any one time.
• Twin Rivers staff absorb a lot of anti-social behaviour from clients who are understandably anxious, sceptical, angry, ashamed, feeling guilty, craving and seeking pills, passive-aggressive and highly manipulative and yet client respect always remains intact. A common thread is that clients ‘test’ the staff and their new environment often underpinned by unwittingly attempting to recreate unhealthy yet familiar family of origin experiences.

Recovery itself is rarely linear and the journey can feel complex for both clients and families as they navigate early recovery with a somewhat damaged and skewed mindset.

At Twin Rivers Recovery integrity, accountability, and genuine care are upheld daily so as our clients can gradually embrace that essential life changes are achievable.

These principles continue to guide the work we do at Twin Rivers Recovery every day because at the heart of our recovery programme is something very simple:

People helping people rebuild their lives and instilling hope.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐇 recovery has, in many ways, become a paradox that feeds the sceptics. On one side, clients are pampered with personal chefs, massages, and bedtime stories. On the other, government-funded rehabs struggle to provide basic therapeutic input. And yet, both extremes lead their clients to the exact same places including the fellowship meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous!

When I first went for addiction treatment in 1995 there was two group therapy sessions a day on ‘powerlessness and damages, no gym, no excursions, no tuck shop, lots of step work, lectures, workshops and drama therapy. Realistic individualised consequences followed poor attitudes and behaviours and access to a phone was very limited.

After a devastating relapse in 2023 and a year in treatment my role in the industry has changed. I no longer work on-site at Twin Rivers Recovery Centre, instead now work remotely for Twin Rivers focussing on marketing, client services, programme development and admissions. I relocated to the city of Johannesburg which I am really enjoying 😊

“With over 50 years of lived and professional experience in addiction and mental health, I not only work remotely as the founder of Twin Rivers Rehab but also consult for treatment facilities worldwide. My role is to provide trusted, hands-on expertise that helps new and established recovery-based facilities build strong foundations, improve client care, and achieve sustainable growth.”

The following services are on offer for those who recognise how a ‘fresh eyes’ professional and practical approach can clear the way for improved functionality for individuals and businesses alike:-

• Rehab start up guidance saving time and money for investors. Due diligence is key as well as location and property lay out and whether it is recovery conducive
• Staff employment and development. Effective line-management and staff motivation.
• Guidance for new or struggling rehabs, halfway houses and aftercare services.
• Programme development and flexibility. Client complaints and exit questionnaires.
• Management styles and clinical team training.
• Marketing and networking, creating credible collaborations.
• How to optimize client services that promotes recovery sustainability
• As a psychodynamic counsellor I have many years of experience working with ‘cluster B’ clients in a group therapy setting and can facilitate specialised lectures, workshops and group therapy on codependency, emotional sobriety, s*x and s*xuality, spirituality, embracing trauma, relationship with food, dry drunk syndrome and much more.
• Public speaking. Motivational talks
My approach is direct, respectful and practical. I know what works and what doesn’t work as I have lived both sides of the coin!

Then let’s talk. Recovery isn’t meant to be easy – but it can be honest, effective, and transformative.

Please get in touch – let’s bring honour back to recovery.
