Twin Rivers Rehab Twin Rivers Recovery Centre for those suffering from addiction and mental health conditions πŸŒˆβ˜€οΈπŸ˜πŸ¦œ

The International clinical team here at Twin Rivers will be doing everything possible to help you to break free of addiction. We provide you with a safe environment, the best resources, and daily support, but only you, at the end of the day can make this essential transformation happen. The truth is that we cannot guarantee your success, but the good news is you can! Here are 5 tips so you can mak

e Twin Rivers Recovery Programme work for you:

1. Get Rid of Any Ambivalence You Might Have Towards Alcohol or Drug Abuse
β€œHalf measures availed us nothing” - Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book

If you are ambivalent towards recovery, it means you are not fully committed to this new way of living. This would be the case if you believe that by staying sober for a certain amount of time is going to mean you will be able to use alcohol or abuse drugs again successfully! If you want to enjoy a good life in sobriety you need to let go of this desire to drink or use drugs again completely. It is only then that you will be able to fully commit to the Twin Rivers recovery programme.

2. Understand the Importance and Power of Humility
β€œMy best thinking got me here” - Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book

The fact that you have become addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, s*x, po*******hy or are codependent doesn’t mean you are a bad person, you are unwell! You have developed unhelpful and destructive patterns of thinking that need to be addressed. If you enter Twin Rivers with an arrogant attitude; that you already have all the answers then you will undoubtedly fail. In order to succeed you need to develop enough humility to become and remain teachable on a daily basis. Humility – β€˜the quality of having a modest or low view of one's own importance’

3. Take Responsibility for Getting the Most Out of the Twin Rivers Recovery Programme

The Twin Rivers treatment is not a passive experience. All the resources you need to succeed are here, but are worthless unless you make use of them all. This is your life that’s in serious trouble, so you do need to take responsibility for your sobriety-one day at a time! Addiction has led your mind and body to become lethargic and lazy, but you need to overcome this and take charge. Twin Rivers can only help those who are willing to help themselves, take responsibility and try something new by asking for HELP!

4. Have Some Faith in the Power of Recovery

Getting sober requires a leap of faith, and unfortunately this is why many clients choose to stay miserable and in denial. You don’t know for sure what is going to happen when you give up addiction, so you need to have some faith that it is going to mean a better quality of life. You already have some insight in that doing the wrong things in life leads to pain and suffering, so it certainly isn’t entirely unreasonable to believe the opposite exists! Blind faith is required at the beginning of your journey, we invite you to trust the process-take the cotton wool out of your ears and LISTEN to what is on offer!

5. Be Willing to Do Whatever it Takes

The secret of those who have managed to develop a long-lasting sobriety is that they became willing to do whatever it takes; they have gone to any lengths to grow and maintain their recovery. This level of determination can turn you into an unstoppable and positive force. This approach can allow you to get the most out of the whole Twin Rivers recovery process and beyond. It involves letting go of all the β€˜excuses’ for why you can’t succeed and instead focusing on what can help you to succeed and improve your quality of life rather than focusing on revenge, anger and blame.

Introducing The Dragonfly Foundation-
Supporting Recovery
At Twin Rivers Rehab.
We know that recovery is not a one size fits all process. Twin Rivers clients make incredible progress during their initial stay and some of them must face the harsh reality of needing more time in residential care, without the means to afford it.
This is why Twin Rivers created The Dragonfly Foundation- Registration number 253-031 NPO
As a registered non-profit organization since 2021, The Dragonfly Foundation exists to
financially support clients already in our care who are committed to their recovery but are not in a position financially to extend the treatment they urgently need.
Twin Rivers does not offer β€œfree” treatmentβ€”because experience has shown us that this approach is counterproductive. Instead, we assist clients who have already shown engagement and progress, providing targeted help for those who are simply not ready to
leave residential treatment. Client selection is team orientated, and we do not draw up repayment contracts as this could defeat the object of the whole exercise, placing a client under unnecessary financial pressure during the early stages of their recovery.
Perhaps, at some point in a client’s life they may want to donate to The Dragonfly Foundation, but this is in no way expected. The foundation is β€˜charged’ a revised rate that covers an individual client’s day to day expenses only.
Since 2021 The Dragonfly Foundation has assisted many clients with treatment fees,
prescription invoices, even ci******es as sitting in rehab without ci******es as a smoker
can be very distracting for a client!
The foundation is proudly managed by The NGO Consulting Group, experts in overseeing purpose-driven organizations to ensure finances are effectively handled.
πŸ’‘We are open to any ideas, collaborations, or support that can help us generate donations and grow our impact. Whether you're an individual donor, a corporate
partner, or someone with a creative fundraising ideaβ€”we’d love to hear from you.
Let’s give recovery the time it truly needs.

David's Story & Latest Goal!

I was born on the 12th of June 1961 in Buckinghamshire in England, the youngest of 3 siblings all of whom developed addiction and mental health problems despite there being β€˜no’ addiction or chronic mental issues amongst immediate or past family members!

Lonely Child

Prior to an extensive period of substance abuse David can now clearly see that his primary addiction was β€˜attention seeking’ as typically the β€˜spotlight was not on him and his need for approval and acknowledgement steered him towards alternative external distractions which began with pinball machines at a local cafΓ© age 10.

The need to finance the pinball machine led to the thrill and intensity of obtaining money from those who rejected him, intensified by a deep yearning for affection, recognition and need for acceptance.

By 12 years of age, David was consuming alcohol and smoking ci******es, spending as little time at home as possible. David’s school years were very challenging as he was bullied and very much β€˜on his own’ with no support. He left school as soon as he possibly could.

Davids parents divorced when he was 14 and by the time, he was 16 he was living on his own in a bedsit. David’s mother’s life was tough, made even more difficult by David’s behaviour so she moved away and pretty much left David to it and his father was not around. David was now drinking quite heavily and taking amphetamines daily.

David’s Darkest Years

For the next 18 years David’s life was a pathetic litany of irrational choices and behaviours to try and β€˜connect’ and numb uncomfortable feelings, not realising that he was drifting further away from the world! His only relationship was with drugs and alcohol, no girlfriend, no friendships, no direction which led to David being homeless and completely lost!

Opportunity To Hide

David went to rehab in 1995 purely to get away from a bad situation and had absolutely no intention of changing his direction in life. David had no money, no luggage, not even a cigarette and his treatment was funded by the government. The rehab gave David clothes, ci******es, and a comfortable bed, generating a β€˜comfort’ that was totally foreign to David!
8 weeks residential treatment was followed by 14 months in a halfway house, all funded by the state. David still finds it difficult to describe what happened in rehab, but he does know they genuinely β€˜cared’ and he remembers feeling respected, held, and acknowledged. David was invited to be a trainee counsellor at the rehab when he was 4 years into recovery. All staff in those days had to be at least 4 years in recovery! David attended college part time and completed various psychology and counselling courses over a 5-year period.
Job Offer in South Africa

In 2001 David was offered a job in South Africa and soon promoted to β€˜Head of Treatment’. David worked in a handful of rehabs in South Africa and was not enamoured by the general standard of client care.
In 2011 David and his wife opened their own rehab called Twin Rivers. Now, over 12 years old, Twin Rivers (fully licensed) has become a reputable, leading, and respected treatment facility that addresses addiction and mental health simultaneously in an environment that emulates Davids own rehab experience.

On a meagre budget David gradually created Africa’s premier flagship treatment centre that leads the way in effectively and compassionately treating the needs of those suffering with addiction and mental health disorders.

Having accomplished this goal, David now desires to utilize his experience and skill set elsewhere in the world where can assist in developing and possibly managing an innovative client service that will meet the needs of the surrounding culture.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Growth

The Middle East has grown dramatically over the years with cities like Dubai moving from being a quaint pearl diving harbour to becoming a thriving cosmopolitan city that has successfully blended tradition with innovative architecture, luxury shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Dubai has become a world leading business and financial hub that attracts multinational corporations, and the tourist trade is booming all year round!

It’s a fantastic achievement with Dubai’s ruler, β€˜His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum being directly involved in many of Dubai’s innovative projects. His Highness has recently disclosed his latest goal in building a new and even bigger Palm development that’s bigger than the Palm Jumeriah.

Damage Control

Quite typically, the fast-track growth of a nation does mean the needs of its inhabitants, such as access to professional assistance with addiction and mental health may not receive enough attention. No one could have foreseen just how big and diverse Dubai would become and so it’s no surprise that Dubai finds itself with a growing addiction and mental health epidemic with limited resources to deal with the increasing problem.
Presently, many addiction and mental health sufferers are being sent to treatment facilities outside of the UAE, which is fine, but this approach certainly impinges on UAE pride, being a country that likes to assess and deal with its only internal issues within the population. Also, UAE culture could be negatively impacted by western or foreign influence whilst clients address their personal issues abroad!

David’s Contribution

Dubai and surrounding states lead the way it so many areas as already mention in this article, but addressing the addiction and mental health epidemic desperately needs a fresh perspective.
Presently treatment is available for the wealthy, many of whom come from other countries for β€˜holiday’ based treatment and there are couple of very good, well-meaning government facilities that cannot possibly meet the demand.
David has several ideas that will positively impact the addiction and mental health problem in Dubai, and he is open to meeting with anyone who has similar interests in wanting to address addiction and mental health issues in the UAE. David’s ideas could be utilized anywhere in the Middle East once the uniqueness of that state or countries regulations are better understood by David and then he will be able to deliver fresh ideas and an approach that fully respects local cultural needs.
David’s energy, adaptability and commitment is infectious and his ability to listen and be a flexible team player is worth tapping into!

NEW GOOGLE REVIEW
MasterMind Pete
Dear David and the Team

Being lost in your own head is not a great place to be.
On 30 August 2023 I decided on making huge changes in my life and to fix the "demons" in my head after becoming extremely dependent on alcohol to escape from my reality and loneliness.

I decided on Twin Rivers with the help of some friends and others who had been there and WOW was I surprised after walking through the door to a welcoming family of counsellors and staff that completely exceeded my expectations. When you expect a prison like environment but instead get a mixture of care & personal sacrifice to help us with our addictive personalities and personal poison of choice.

After staying a month, not only have I learnt a new way of thinking, but become a new me in positivity and "letting go" of all the troubles that plagued me over the last few years.
My life has changed forever and I am extremely grateful to everyone who made me feel comfortable within myself.

To David - your caring nature and wise words are nothing short of brilliant.
To Richard - my focal counsellor of infinite wisdom and spirituality like no other.
To Austin - your intuitiveness and calm way of dealing with us "nutters" always made me feel well cared for while Richard was away.
To the rest of the Team, from the carers, Viv & Mavis, the kitchen team under "T", and all the other staff; thank you from the bottom of my heart for always taking care of all of our needs.

Looking forward to coming to Plett in the coming weeks to visit you all and see all my community friends, because we all became friends in this amazing environment.

All the best & God Bless to you all.
