The Moonbloom vegetable and herb planting calendar 2024 is a South African calendar that assists you in knowing when and what to plant in the month to create a simple, healthy planting cycle in your organic garden.

🥬🌻🌱🌚🌻It is new moon in November and the moon's beginning to wax and grow stronger. Throughout South Africa it is a good time to plant your amaranth, sweet basil, fennel, lettuce, marjoram, mint, oregano, rocket, rosemary, sage, thyme, globe artichoke and sunflowers. If you are not gardening in a summer tropical climate zone, then you can also plant your dill, kale, watercress, globe artichoke, cabbage and asparagus.

🌑-🌗 New moon to first quarter, waxing crescent (increasing): semi fertile. This is the ideal time to plant crops that produce their seeds outside the fruit. It is also most suited to sowing or transplanting leafy annuals (we eat the leaves, flowers or stem).

🥔🌱🌛 The moon is waning to new moon, thus a semi-barren period ahead. Good time to plant or transplant, but not the best time to sow seed. This week, throughout South Africa, you can plant your Jerusalem artichoke, sweet potato, chives and spring onion. If you are not living in a summer tropical climate, then you can also plant your beetroot, ginger, horseradish and turmeric.

🌓-🌑 Last Quarter to New Moon - As the moonlight decreases night by night, plants are encouraged to grow roots, tubers and bulbs.

🫚🪱🌱🌝🥔 The moon is full in October and beginning to wane (decrease). Throughout South Africa it is a good time to plant your sweet potato, ginger, horseradish, radish, turmeric, chives and spring onion.

🌕-🌓 Full Moon to Last Quarter - As the moon wanes, it is beneficial to those plants who rely on strong root systems, things that grow underground, plants that are decorative or fruiting perennials. A good time to sow / plant / transplant your root, bulb and tuber crops. Now is the time to mow and prune to decrease growth, and do stem cuttings to produce new roots. Apply compost, mulch and an organic foliar spray.

Now is a good time to apply a foliar spray before and after a full moon to both sides of your veggie’s leaves in the early morning or early evening 🌱🍅👍🌕

A good spray is EM (anaerobic effective organisms) which, in simple terms, puts the beneficial organisms back on your plant and in your soil. These organisms fight fungal disease, so good to spray especially now with all your young tomato and squash seedlings planted. In fact, spray it all over your whole garden - it can only do it good. The best thing is, it is highly concentrated, so a bottle goes a long way!

Heirloom tomato’s trellised and planted! Lots of sweet basil in between. Adapting to the fence structure has filled me with optimism especially realising the permaculture benefits. Just love how structurally it can grow.
My special heirlooms are transplanted into handmade paper pots together with a pellet or 2 and earth worm castings.
3 Leopard tortoises are residing in my big veggie garden. Still debating if I’m mad or not to have them in there.
Still harvesting plenty of broad beans and peas, the poppies are bursting and just yes, had to stick in another pic of adorable cuteness of 1 of Dozer’s puppies 🥹❤️🌱😄

New babies 😍 Dozer is a daddy to 3 beautiful pups - my gosh utterly adorable. Our young turkeys have just had poults - yes, thats we you call young turkey chicks, and planted out loads of young seedlings today. My garden is happening!!!! It was a good day 🌞🌱🧡

🍅🫘🍆🌝🌱 A wonderful fertile week ahead - sow, plant, transplant - don't delay - get your summer veg in!!!! Throughout South Africa you can plant your brinjal, okra, chillies, sweet peppers, tomatillo, tomato, French beans, lima beans and maize. If you are not living in a summer tropical climate zone then you can also plant your cucumber, marrow, pumpkin, squash and runner beans.

First quarter to full moon 🌗-🌕 The moon is waxing to full moon in October. The success rate of seed germination increases a few days before a full moon. This phase is most suited to fruiting annuals of which we value or eat the fruit or seed-bearing part of the plant.

Now is the time to plant your annual flowers, do root cuttings to produce new stems, prune to increase growth, cut grass to increase growth, and apply a foliar spray (apply to both sides of the leaves, early morning or early evening).
