On 30 September, the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park became a place of courage, compassion, and community as SANParks hosted their annual Cancer Awareness Walk.
More than 200 people, from local residents to SANParks staff and partners, gathered to walk side by side in honour of survivors, in support of those currently fighting cancer, and in remembrance of loved ones lost. π
Organised in collaboration with CANSA and the Wilderness community, the 6 km route from Ebb and Flow Rest Camp symbolised resilience and the power of walking this journey together.
September is recognised as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and while October traditionally shines a spotlight on breast cancer, SANParks chose to host this walk earlier, ensuring timely health screenings and making a heartfelt statement that cancer awareness matters all year round.ππ½
For many SANParks staff living in remote park areas, access to healthcare can be limited. Events like this bring essential services closer to home, offering not just medical support but also a strong reminder that they are not alone. This is part of SANParksβ broader vision, that people, nature, and community well-being are deeply connected.
Our hearts go out to anyone who has been personally or indirectly affected by cancer. While this disease changes lives, seeing a community come together with such unity and care is a powerful reminder of hope.π
To SANParks and everyone who walked this path of awareness and solidarity - thank you. Your efforts show us that conservation isnβt only about protecting the natural world, but also about nurturing the people who call these places home.
