Yesterday, World TB Awareness Day, marked the culmination of a six-month campaign conducted by The PlettAid Foundation/ Hospice Plett on behalf of the Western Cape Department of Health.

The campaign was geared toward 'Closing the Gap' between those individuals who are HIV positive and those on HIV treatment programmes. In South Africa, a significant percentage of HIV+ patients also have TB. This phenomenon led us to focus the campaign on these 2 treatable diseases.

Our young Close the Gap team hosted a series of very informative talks and manned a testing station at the Kwanokuthula Primary Health Care Clinic yesterday. A huge shout-out to all concerned - the morning was a resounding success, and the impact of your efforts will be felt by the entire Bitou Community. Our CHWs welcomed the speakers with songs of praise and thanks!

TB is still a serious health challenge in South Africa.
In 2023, an estimated 270,000 people developed TB, and more than half of people diagnosed with TB were also living with HIV.
While South Africa has reduced the number of new TB cases since 2015, too many people are still dying from TB - showing that more support is needed.
TB treatment can be long and difficult.
Palliative care helps people affected by TB by easing symptoms like pain, breathlessness, fatigue, and treatment side effects, while also offering emotional and practical support to patients and their families.
This care is provided alongside TB treatment, helping people stay comfortable and supported throughout their care journey.

Find out how South Africa is improving TB care and working towards ending TB by reading the Department of Health’s National TB Recovery Plan 4.0:

TB is still one of the most common illnesses in the Western Cape — and in Bitou too.

But here’s the good news: TB is treatable and curable.

When we talk openly about TB, we protect our families, neighbours, and workplaces.

If you’ve been coughing for 2 weeks or more, feeling tired, losing weight, or sweating at night, we can help. Testing is quick, free, and confidential!

Look out for our Mobile Team, our community health workers or pop into your local clinic. Testing is FREE and confidential. Alternatively, if you would prefer, chat to your GP.

If you're a business owner, contact us, and we can visit your business and do on-site TB screening - saving you the lost productivity of staff taking leave to visit the clinic.

On World NGO Day, we honour the vital role NGOs play in South Africa’s healthcare landscape.

Every day, our members show up with compassion, skill, and quiet strength, supporting patients and families through some of life’s most overwhelming moments.

We manage symptoms, hold difficult emotions, and create a sense of safety when everything feels uncertain. This work is deeply meaningful, but also demanding.

To every nurse, doctor, social worker, counsellor, spiritual care provider, caregiver, administrator, and volunteer: your wellbeing is essential. You deserve the same care and compassion you give so generously.

Today, we celebrate NGOs as pillars of hope and humanity in South Africa.

Together, let’s continue building a culture where supporting the caregiver is recognised as a core part of palliative care, and where NGOs are valued for the dignity, comfort, and humanity they bring to families every day.

When you donate your previously loved household items and clothing to our Charity Shop, you’re doing something truly meaningful. Every item you pass on has the power to make a difference. Here’s how:

• You give your treasures a second life
Someone else gets to enjoy what you no longer need — a beautiful way to reduce waste and keep useful things in circulation.

• You support compassionate care in our community**
Proceeds from your donations directly help us provide comfort, dignity, and support to patients and families when they need it most.

• You make sustainable choices easy
Donating instead of discarding lightens your footprint and contributes to a more mindful, eco-friendly way of living.

• You help create affordable shopping for others
Your gently used items become accessible, budget-friendly finds for local families.

A small act for you becomes a big ripple of kindness for someone else. Thank you for choosing to give back in such a heartfelt way.
