We are based at Castleton Estate here in Plettenberg Bay.

I specialise in senior care and understand that getting to a consultation is not always easy. If you are unable to come to my rooms, I am happy to travel to your home to ensure you still receive the care and support you need.

Your mobility, comfort, and independence matter 🤍

Growing older does not mean slowing down. It means moving smarter 🤍

We are often told to take it easy as we age, but a sedentary lifestyle is one of the worst things for your spine and overall health.

Your muscles are designed to be used. When they move, they support your spine, protect your joints, and help you feel strong and capable. When they are not used, they weaken, which can lead to stiffness, pain, and loss of confidence.

The good news is that movement does not have to be extreme. Gentle, regular activity keeps your body supported, resilient, and independent for longer.

Motion really is medicine at every age ✨

Your sleep position matters more than you think 💤
According to spinal surgeon Dr Betty Grunch, the way you sleep can either support your spine or strain it for hours at a time.

The goal isn’t perfect posture while you sleep.
It’s keeping your spine as neutral and supported as possible so your muscles, joints, and discs can actually recover overnight.

Small adjustments like pillow placement and position can make a big difference to morning stiffness, neck pain, and lower back discomfort.

Your spine works hard all day.
Let sleep be the time it truly resets.

Fun for Tom… not so much for poor Grandad 😬

Lifting little ones is a joy, but it’s also one of the most common ways backs get injured.

Bending from the waist, twisting, or lifting without support can strain muscles and joints very quickly, especially as we get older.

A simple reminder:
• Bend your knees
• Keep the child close to your body
• Engage your core
• Avoid twisting while lifting

Small changes in how you move can make a big difference to your spine and long-term mobility.

Your body deserves care too 💙

Avoid Weak Core and Back Muscles

Your spine is supported far more by muscle than most people realise.

When the core and back muscles are weak or underactive, the spine absorbs more load than it should. Over time, this can lead to pain, instability, and reduced mobility.

Strong does not mean intense or gym-based. It means the right muscles working in the right way to support everyday movement.

Targeted strengthening and guided exercise play a key role in protecting spinal health at every age.

Avoid Prolonged Sitting

Your spine is designed to move, not to stay in one position for hours at a time.

Prolonged sitting increases pressure on spinal discs and switches off key support muscles, especially in the lower back and hips. Over time, this can lead to stiffness, weakness, and persistent pain.

Regular movement helps nourish the discs, support healthy posture, and keep the muscles that protect your spine active.

Small, frequent movement breaks can make a big difference to long-term spinal health.

Avoid Ni****ne

Ni****ne is one of the biggest accelerators of degenerative disc disease in the spine.

Your back is not just bones, discs, and joints.
It is largely supported by muscle, ligaments, and healthy tissue that rely on good blood flow to stay strong and resilient.

Ni****ne reduces circulation, slows healing, and places unnecessary strain on the structures that support your spine.

Protecting your spinal health starts with supporting the tissues that keep it stable and mobile.

The 5 Things to Avoid for Spinal Health

Your spine isn’t just bones and discs.
It’s a living, supported system, and much of that support comes from muscle.

Spinal surgeons like Dr Betsy Grunch often emphasise that protecting your back isn’t only about what you do, it’s also about what you avoid.

Over the next few posts, we’ll unpack the top 5 things to avoid if you want a healthier spine, better mobility, and less pain as you age.

This is preventative care, and it matters more than you think.

This is your gentle reminder from your physio to head out for a beach walk 🌊💙

It’s free, it boosts circulation, strengthens your muscles, and gives you a healthy dose of vitamin D — all while calming your mind.

Your body will thank you for it.

Every spine has its own natural shape. What matters most is keeping your core muscles strong to support and protect your back — no matter its curve.
Movement, strength, and awareness go a long way in preventing pain and injury.
