Forget - me - not & my life lesson

These fragile flowers are in full bloom here in Plettenberg Bay at them moment & I see them every day on my walks in the bush.

They remind me each & every time of Mary (name has been changed) who I only met in her very late stage of her Dementia journey. It seemed that she had lost the majority of her cognitive function & with that her memory. Our conversations were very reduced due to the lack of words she could find & so we just walked through the gardens next to each other.
It may have seemed pointless BUT by walking along side her & stepping into her world & shoes we built up a relationship beyond words. A heart-to-heart relationship.
One day as we sat on one of the benches along the path, she bent down & picked a little flower, turned to me and said:

FORGET ME NOT

No words can describe what this meant to me, how it touched me in my heart, what essential lesson she taught me in that moment.

No matter where we "think" people with Dementia are & what their cognitive ability may be - the heart-to-heat connection NEVER leaves us - this is where we can reach & touch each other at all times - with or without Dementia

For ever grateful to have met you, Mary & the essential life lesson you taught me 💜
