"Mental ill health is real; ignoring the issue certainly does not make it go away. It touches all ages and all socio-economic levels, rich and poor. The negative impact on business hits directly at customer satisfaction and bottom-line results. The fact that most business leaders resist addressing this challenge baffles me. Many among them are just as ill, so this is no longer a sustainable model. Reservoir tanks of resilience among employees and many managing incumbents have been empty for the longest time to date. While many queue in psychiatric health facilities, others do not even recognise their poor health status due to lack of awareness (or denial) and cultural ignorance".

MENTAL ILLNESS: A LIFE CHALLENGE THAT EMPLOYERS DENY OR WISH AWAY I am often taken aback by how much mental wellness is misunderstood by many in the workplace. While some employers may be aware of the prevalence of the challenge among their workforce, its true impact on productivity is often downpla...

"Are we sincerely concerned about the struggles that women face daily just to keep afloat? Do we stop to really engage their survival matters that involve hustling for holistic emancipation and economic independence? NO! Are we concerned about shifting the landscape for women to have better access to opportunities of growth and advancement in this country? Really??!! Are we serious about this or are we entertained to oblivion by majority of women’s perpetual poverty and toxic dependence on men? Are we all OK to be complicit and maintain our collective nonchalance about this challenge throughout the 12-month cycle of each year? Are we happy to disregard the many barriers and ills that downplay women’s human dignity and worth bethunani???!!! What will it take for us to see an end to objectification, toxic masculinity and inappropriate ownership of women by men? Why are we not outraged by these issues to the point of sustainable action and impact? We find all forms of this phenomenon in all spaces that have women in them; at home is where it begins, in the workplace, the church, the mall, the park, the taxi rank, at gym; you can think of any place under the sun… (my goodness!)."

The hyperbolised, disingenuous hype around celebration of women and acknowledgement of their struggle is over, thank heavens! The month of August in South Africa has become such a dreaded source of exhaustion for me on all fronts, honestly. I am in no mood to celebrate, commemorate or do anything th...

"Organisations that are serious about diversity and inclusivity are not satisfied with being legally and politically correct. They take steps to ensure that their human resources systems are engineered in such a way as to accommodate all their workforce and that their practices are culturally and socially sensitive. Below is an elucidation of how the incidences of fake or unauthentic relationships manifest in the workplace".

The inequalities that characterise South African society are a breeding ground for fake and unauthentic relationships in the workplace. This state of affairs is perpetuated by the bifurcated nature of South African society. The South African society is divided along racial, ethnic, social, and econo...

Often, when we hear the term ‘job loss’ we are immediately drawn to focus on the employee who actually loses employment. Yet the process is far more insidious than that in terms of human effects. More individuals are involved besides the employee who is exiting the organisation. This paper will highlight the different ways in which job loss affects a wider spectrum of society inside and outside the organisation. Varying effects of job loss are felt by the employer, remaining employees, overall organisational system, external economy and society at large.

When a person eventually gets an opportunity to work, the transition from student life shocks their system. The structured (and sometimes highly regulated) environment of the workplace is like night and day to a carefree student. Time management for some becomes problematic, for those who are accustomed to sleeping later than 10pm. The pace of work and delivery deadlines is another. Organizational cultures can be intimidating and sometimes toxic. Often young people struggle to understand the transition, which on its own induces high levels of anxiety.

How was your experience when you stepped into the workplace environment?
