21 March:

Individuals with have a higher likelihood of being obese than their typically developing peers. Sometimes it is the result of hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid doesn’t produce enough of certain hormones. Due to hypothyroidism people with Down syndrome may have a lower level of metabolism, i.e., their bodies may burn fewer calories and store more thus become overweight or obese.

Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism include increased sleepiness, confusion, or mood changes. These should not be used in isolation to diagnose hypothyroidism, a doctor should consider ordering a blood test to check thyroid function.

Weight management issues in individuals with Down syndrome are often due to the intake of too many calories in relation to the level of physical activity.

Strategies for treating and preventing obesity involve:

🥦Eating smaller portion sizes
🍌Using healthy ingredients that increase bulk (like fiber, fruits, and vegetables)
🥑Increasing water intake
🥕Eating fewer snacks between meals
🍎Empowering adults to monitor their own weight
🌽Involving supervisors at work and school on the treatment plan
🍊Preparing meals at home
🍏Not using food as a reward
🍅Introducing a daily exercise routine that is appropriate to the person’s interests and skills.

Oral diseases, while largely preventable, pose a major health burden for many countries and affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement and even death.

Oral diseases are caused by a range of modifiable risk factors common to many noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including sugar consumption, to***co use, alcohol use and poor hygiene, and their underlying social and commercial determinants.
Prevention of oral diseases include:

🍏 Promoting a well-balanced diet low in free sugars and high in fruit and vegetables, and favouring water as the main drink;
🚭Avoiding the use of all forms of to***co, including chewing of areca nuts;
🍻Limiting alcohol consumption; and
⛑️🚴‍♀️ Ecouraging use of protective equipment when doing sports and travelling on bicycles and motorcycles (to reduce the risk of facial injuries).

Ever had anyone tell you to use a certain type of salt because it is better than the one you use?
Is there any salt considered as "healthy" or "good"?

Salt intake is very important to regulate due to the amount of sodium we get from it and its effects on our blood pressure.
