Anina Graham Biokineticist What is Biokinetics? Biokinetics’ primary function is to improve physical functioning and health care through exercise as a modality.

As a health professional, the aim is to create a better quality of life for people of all ages. For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning and understanding the functioning of the human body and the manner in which every single cell, tendon, ligament and muscle works together like a well oiled machine. I completed a degree in Human Movement Science at the now Nelson Mandela University in 2008. In 2009 I completed my Honours specializing in Biokinetics. I have spent eight years working in private practice in Johannesburg where I obtained experience and knowledge in orthopeadic and neurological rehabilitation, sport’s injury prevention and rehabilitation, postural abnormalities, cardiac and metabolic disease management and general health and wellness. During the past three years, I have focused on the treatment of spinal disorders and back and neck rehabilitation. A university lecturer used to say: “We are wonderfully made”. It is truly amazing to see, with the right exercise prescription, how the human body can adapt and respond and the manner in which it can aid recovery, decrease discomfort and increase a person’s functionality.

🍑 GLUTES. ARE. GONE. 🍑

I always tell my patients, “You’ll thank me later”… well, today I’m the one needing an ice pack and a pep talk. 🥲🔥

After a seriously hectic leg session on Monday, my glutes have officially left the chat.
Walking? Optional. Sitting? Painful. Stairs? Absolutely not. 😂

But honestly… I loved every second. Nothing like getting a taste of my own medicine to remind me how real the burn is! 💪🔥

Shoutout to Cals for keeping me strong (and slightly broken).
Here’s to stronger glutes and questionable life choices! 🤣🍑

🌍 Today is World Diabetes Day - a reminder that movement is medicine!

For people living with diabetes, regular, structured exercise is one of the most powerful ways to manage blood sugar levels and improve overall health. Biokineticists design safe, individualized exercise programs that:

💙 Improve insulin sensitivity
💙 Support weight management
💙 Enhance cardiovascular fitness
💙 Reduce the risk of complications

Whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2, biokinetic therapy focuses on helping you move safely and consistently - for lifelong health.

💥 Chronic pain doesn’t have to control your life.

Whether it’s arthritis, back pain, or postural issues, Biokineticists use exercise as therapy to reduce pain and improve movement. By identifying weak or imbalanced muscles, we help retrain the body to move correctly - restoring strength and stability.

Pain-free living starts with better movement.

🦽 Movement After Spinal Injury Matters
Living with a spinal cord injury brings unique challenges - from reduced mobility to managing muscle spasticity and preventing secondary complications. But movement is still possible, and it’s one of the most powerful tools for maintaining health and independence.

Biokineticists specialise in creating safe, adapted exercise programmes for people with paraplegia and other spinal cord injuries. These programmes focus on:
✨ Building and maintaining muscle strength
✨ Improving circulation and joint health
✨ Managing spasticity and pain
✨ Enhancing functional ability for everyday independence

Every session is carefully designed to meet each individual’s needs, ensuring safety while maximising physical potential. Beyond the body, exercise also supports mental well-being and confidence - helping patients take back control of their lives.

Did you know Biokinetics supports patients through the fatigue and weakness of cancer treatment! Tailored exercise helps manage side effects, rebuilds strength and improves endurance. Movement also supports mental well-being, giving patients the confidence to reclaim their daily lives. 🌸

📢Among high‑risk survivors adhering to ACS and AICR guidelines (which include regular physical activity), a recent JAMA Network Open observational study found a 37% reduction in disease recurrence and a 58% decrease in mortality.

Survivors meeting the recommended 150 minutes/week moderate activity both before diagnosis and two years post-treatment saw a 55% lower recurrence risk and 68% lower all‑cause mortality compared to those who didn’t meet guidelines.

Exercise is medicine.

I repeat “EXERCISE IS MEDICINE!”
