Biokineticists fall under the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) meaning we are medically aligned professionals who are able to provide scientifically-based physical activity programs. Simply put, we aim to improve your ability to perform physical activities

and quality of life through individualized testing and program prescription in line with your health status. Our scope has given us the knowledge to work with a vast range of individuals, whether you are a healthy-fit individual, chronically ill (i.e. suffer from a cardiac condition, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, geriatric/elderly, the list goes on...), have any neurological conditions (have suffered a stroke, traumatic brain injury) or have suffered an Orthopaedic injury, we as biokineticists can help you.

📉 Sitting is the New Smoking – Here's Why You Should Care!
We’ve all heard it… “Sitting is the new smoking.” But what does this actually mean for our health?

Research shows that sitting for long hours without moving can have serious health consequences, just like smoking and obesity. Studies have linked excessive sitting to:

⚠️ Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
⚠️ Insulin resistance and inflammation
⚠️ 20-40% increased risk of all-cause mortality

But here’s the thing — it’s not just about the amount of sitting. The lack of exercise combined with long periods of sitting is what poses the greatest threat.

🧠 What can you do?
➡️ Break up sitting: Get up every 30-60 minutes. Walk around, stretch, or do a quick movement break.
➡️ Aim for 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise daily. Even 3-10 minutes of activity can make a difference!

💡 Pro Tip: You don’t need to hit the gym for hours. A brisk walk, a few stretches, or even some desk exercises can help your body stay healthy and reduce the risks of prolonged sitting.

Top Tip Tuesday 🧠💪

Train like an athlete — not a bodybuilder.

Many people default to traditional, double-legged strength exercises (like leg presses or squats) in the gym. While these have value, they don’t always mimic the real-life movement demands of most sports or recreational activities.

🏃‍♂️ Sports and daily movement are often unilateral — think of running, hiking, tennis, even getting out of your car. They require balance, coordination, single-leg strength, and dynamic stability, not just muscle mass.

👉 Athletic training focuses on function — improving how you move, not just how you look. It includes:
• Single-leg training
• Multi-planar movements
• Core integration
• Agility and reaction drills
• Plyometrics and proprioceptive work

📚 Research shows that training functionally:

Reduces injury risk
