Cardiovascular disease is among the top three causes of death in sub-Saharan Africa. This is partly because of rapid urbanisation which has resulted in an upsurge of coronary heart and coronary artery disease (also known as ischaemic heart disease) and metabolic disorders.

The challenge is that the prevalence of the major risk factors has increased in the last 10 years. The main ones include high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, drinking excessively, poor eating habits, obesity and lack of physical activity.

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure.

The main types of cardiomyopathy include dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Treatment — which might include medications, surgically implanted devices, heart surgery or, in severe cases, a heart transplant — depends on the type of cardiomyopathy and how serious it is.

Dr Warren Muller specialises in treating congenital and acquired heart disease, which includes structural defects of the heart.

You probably carve time out of your busy schedule to see medical specialists for a wide range of issues, from cleaning your teeth to treating your allergies. If you consider that noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, are the leading cause of death globally, regular visits to the cardiologist should top most healthcare lists.

Cardiologists’ important work includes early detection, timely diagnosis and effective treatment of NCD risk factors – all of which can help prolong patients’ lives by decades.

The value of having experienced and expert oversight of your cardiovascular health is almost without limits, and we urge you to make your heart health a priority.

You only have one heart, and it works for 24 hrs a day. It never sleeps, so you have to treat it right if you want to keep it pumping for years to come.

For a healthy heart, you have to boost nutrition and color in your meals and snacks. A variety of fruits and vegetables are good for your heart.

Always try to eat foods that are in their natural form, as these foods may help lower your risk of heart disease.

Studies suggest that the high levels of cortisol from long-term stress can increase blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressure. These are common risk factors for heart disease. This stress can also cause changes that promote the buildup of plaque deposits in the arteries.

If you think you're at an increased risk for heart disease because of stress in your life, talk with your healthcare provider.
