Around 90 million children aged 5-19 years, live with hearing loss

Over 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable through simple, cost-effective public health measures.

Among those living with ear diseases or hearing loss, early identification and care are crucial to prevent long-term impacts on development, education, and future opportunities.

Integrating systematic screening and early intervention programmes into school health and child health plans can ensure improved outcomes for children living with ear or hearing problems.

Henry & Carika just returned from an utterly inspiring visit to Oticon HQ in Denmark. Besides the beauty of Copenhagen in the spring, the real revelation was seeing just what it takes to become a global major (one of the “Big5) in hearing aid development and design.
The vertical integration is just astonishing, and it all must work seamlessly together: from the physics of microchip design, meeting the audiological brief (intelligent brain hearing mandates), materials engineering for casing and waterproofing, to verification and real-world testing, to all levels of client communication and marketing worldwide.
Then we, as the very end users, expect even more miracles. The visit went a long way to answering the question ‘Why are hearing aids so expensive!?’ It’s massive in-house biomedical engineering for very few units worldwide (compared to TVs and washing machines!). Their museum of hearing aids was also fascinating and showed just how far we have come and how truly incredible modern hearing aid technology is. We will hopefully come back better at translating these new features into real client benefit.
