🐴 Winter Clipping Tip: Leave a Saddle Patch for Your Horse’s Comfort 🐴
As we prepare our horses for the colder months, many of us opt to clip their winter coats to manage sweating and ease grooming. However, when doing so, it’s beneficial to leave a patch of hair in the shape of the saddle pad—commonly known as a “saddle patch.”
Why leave a saddle patch?
- Reduces Friction and Prevents Rubs: The natural hair provides a protective layer between the saddle and the horse’s back, minimizing friction that can lead to sores or discomfort.
- Enhances Comfort for Sensitive Horses: Some horses, especially those with sensitive skin or thin coats, benefit from the added cushioning the hair offers under the saddle.
- Traditional Clipping Styles: Clipping styles like the hunter clip specifically leave this area unclipped to ensure the horse remains comfortable during work sessions.
Remember, while clipping helps in managing your horse’s comfort and hygiene during winter, ensuring their comfort under the saddle is equally important. Leaving a saddle patch is a simple step that can make a significant difference.
Stay warm and ride safely! 🐎❄️
