Feels fitting to post this on my birthday; I am proud to share that Jeffreys Bay now has its very own advanced centre of eye care - Jeffreys Bay Specialist Eye Centre. I have already been working between P.E and J.Bay for many years but can now offer my J.Bay patients their own full centre of Ophthalmology, complete with some of the latest diagnostic equipment around. I hope you will love it there as much as I do. www.jbayeye.com

My wonderful Port Elizabeth patients - Im not going anywhere! My PE practice at The Eye and Laser Institute is open as always and I will continue to work between the two as I have done for many years. You know where to find me.

Such an honour for me that today, a true legend in our field worked her last day before retiring from Ophthalmology, at my practice.

I know I am not alone in wondering what the world of Ophthalmology will do without the incredible force that is Erika Kruger.

Erika, you have not only been a phenomenal Ophthalmic Assistant to me and those before me but also a driving force in bettering this field, patient by patient.

The only people who could possibly miss you more than I will are the thousands of patients you have helped and embraced in your warmth, wit and true sense of care.

This is now YOUR time. Thank you for everything you have given to colleagues and patients for 35 years. We wish you a retirement filled with all of life’s joys. You have certainly been a great joy in mine.

An update from this side : COVID-19 is a reality for many of us as the numbers climb. Good outcomes build hope for those facing this virus and so I’m therefore happy to share that X-Rays show my lungs are clear and I’m feeling stronger every day. Thank you for every call, message and prayer. I’m almost ready to head back to my work family and amazing patients.

For now I am resting well and as eye surgery will have to wait a little longer, I’m tackling some baby budgie training with my kids (more difficult than eye surgery!) Stay safe everyone.

Thank you for the overwhelming number of calls and all the well wishes. Yes I did test positive for COVID-19 and it’s now Day 6 for me. I am stable so far and have had moderate to severe flu-like symptoms. I will continue to isolate with my family as per protocol. Yes my 4yr old little girl also has COVID-19 and apart from high fevers is otherwise doing very well , thank you for your concern, it is greatly appreciated.

The practice will remain closed for consultations for most of this coming week but our wonderful Ophthalmic Assistant and reception staff will still be available, so do feel free to make contact with the rooms for any queries or appointments which can be scheduled from Monday 28 June.

Apologies to all patients who have had to shift their appointments - Im very grateful for your understanding. See you all soon.

To all of my amazing patients and colleagues, I hope 2021 has started smoothly for you all.

I was blessed to be able to spend some restful time with my wonderful family in December. I had not seen my mother for almost a year and sometimes when life is challenging, all a guy needs is a hug from his Mom. And her legendary desserts of course!

I don't think 2020 was the year that anyone had wished it to be...but it did bring clear focus : apart from good health it is undeniably family, friendship and community that keep our hearts beating and help us to truly live, not just survive.

My beautiful children and wife continue to be such a source of love and strength and I am deeply grateful to share my life with them. My daughter, Iris, says her goals for 2021 are "to dance and hug more" and I think those are pretty solid goals.

As we move into this new year the distressing reality is that many of us have lost colleagues, friends and loved ones to this dreadful virus. But Covid-19 will not win. As sons and daughters, as parents, as healthcare workers and as members of our resilient communities we are stronger than the virus. And we will pick up the pieces - and most importantly help others to pick up theirs - and move forward into 2021 with the blazing fire of conviction to end this darkness.

Thank you to my “work family”, my phenomenal staff at the practice, for adapting to all of our new health and safety protocol so competently in 2020 and now in this new year for unwaveringly protecting our patients! I am so proud to work with such an amazing team.

I'm also hugely grateful to all of the extraordinary staff of the Eye and Laser Institute and the Medical Forum Theatre (MFT) as well as the brilliant anaesthetists that I am blessed to work with. I love being a surgeon but getting to operate in such an epic theatre and with such exceptional people takes it to a whole other level.

2021 we are coming for you... let’s do this! Together.

I’ve posted similarly before but many people don’t realise there are serious hazards lurking in our homes that can lead to permanent eye damage and blindness.

Every day I receive queries about vision loss and I realise there is a lot of misunderstanding about what cataracts are and how they can be treated; here is a quick and simple explanation of the basics! Cataract extraction surgery is one of my favourite procedures as the results can be totally life changing for the patient.
