Our team had the pleasure of attending Food Show Africa 2025 from 27โ€“29 August 2025 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. This premier exhibition which is one of Africaโ€™s largest for food, beverages, and raw materials and featured over 150 exhibitors, welcomed more than 8,000 professional visitors.

The event offered an excellent showcase of the entire food value chain, from raw ingredients to processed goods and innovative packaging. It was a rich blend of networking, insights into new market trends, and opportunities to explore solutions across the continentโ€™s dynamic food and beverage industry.

Alarming finding from the National Consumer Commission (NCC) in KZN

When South Africans walk into a store, they trust that the products on the shelves are safe, fairly labelled, and priced transparently. But recent inspections by the The National Consumer Commission (NCC) in KwaZulu-Natal reveal just how fragile that trust can be.

Expired food. Mislabelled goods. Prices missing from shelves. Even receipts written in foreign languages. These are violations of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) and a direct threat to consumer safety.

Why This Should Concern All of Us

Food and consumer goods are essentials tied directly to public health and safety. When meat is sold past its expiry date, or when products are mislabelled, itโ€™s not only the law being broken but itโ€™s the consumerโ€™s right to make an informed, safe choice.

For many families, the shops inspected are their only accessible option. That makes strict compliance with food safety and labelling laws non-negotiable.

The Bigger Picture: Public Health and Accountability

This incident is a reminder that protecting consumers is not the NCCโ€™s job alone. Retailers, suppliers, regulators, and consumers all share responsibility for ensuring that:

โ€ข Products are safe and stored properly.

โ€ข Labelling is clear, accurate, and in plain language.

โ€ข Pricing is displayed honestly and transparently.

A Call for Integrity in Retail

At ASC Public Health & Food Safety, we believe accountability is central to trust in the food system. Retailers and suppliers must see compliance as an obligation to the people they serve.

We commend the The National Consumer Commission and enforcement agencies for their proactive inspections and urge all stakeholders in the food and retail space to prioritise compliance. Because when standards slip, itโ€™s the consumer who pays the price.

At ASC Public Health & Food Safety, we provide specialised training and courses that help businesses meet food safety, labelling, and compliance requirements with confidence.
