It's Fun Fact Friday, and we're spicing things up with a deep dive into ginger! 🫚

This powerful root is a staple in many kitchens, but are you storing it correctly?

⚠️ Many of us store ginger incorrectly, leading to spoilage and dangerous mould growth.

💡 Did you know that simply cutting off a mouldy spot on ginger isn't safe?

Unlike hard cheese, ginger is porous. When mould appears on the surface, its invisible, thread-like roots (called mycotoxins) have likely spread throughout the entire piece.

🚨PUBLIC SWIMMING POOLS WATER SAFETY ALERT — FESTIVE SEASON 2025 🚨

ASC Food Safety and Public Health Consultants has released the findings of an intensive study evaluating the
microbiological safety and maintenance of public swimming pools within the Nelson Mandela Bay
Metropolitan Municipality (NMBM) and the Kouga Local Municipality.

The study, initiated on 12 December 2025, was prompted by long-standing public concerns regarding the
deteriorating condition and safety of recreational water facilities.

Notably, the research included the widely
used swimming facilities in Jeffreys Bay to account for the increasing trend of NMBM residents traveling to
nearby towns in search of safer, more functional alternatives.

In collaboration with municipal officials and private facility owners, water samples were collected directly from
the following sites:

• Nelson Mandela Bay: New Brighton, Rosedale (Kariega), Gelvandale, Malabar, James Kleinhans
(Westering), and Varsvlei (Bethelsdorp).
• Kouga Municipality: Dolphin Beach Entertainment (Jeffreys Bay).

Fun Fact Friday!

Nothing says summer like a sweet slice of watermelon. 🍉

Did you know that watermelon is a refreshing fruit that is 92% water, but because it grows on the ground, the rind can harbour bacteria.

Follow these easy tips to ensure you enjoy your slice of watermelon safely.

-Always wash the whole watermelon under running water before cutting to prevent contamination.
-Use clean knives and cutting boards.
-Refrigerate cut watermelon at ≤5°C.
-Eat it within 3–4 days, and discard any slices that are slimy, sour, or bubbling.

Remember, high-risk groups such as pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals should be especially careful. Wash the rind, chill after cutting, and stay safe!
