🌟 Community Outreach at Algoa Park ACVV Centre 🌟

This week, our Summerstrand practice had the privilege of visiting the ACVV Centre in Algoa Park for a special community outreach. We spent the day sharing valuable information about hearing health and hearing loss, and conducted hearing screening tests for the community.

It was a rewarding opportunity to raise awareness, offer support, and empower individuals with knowledge about their hearing.

A big thank you to the staff at the ACVV Centre and to everyone who took part — your warm welcome and participation made the day so meaningful.

This brother and sister duo visited our Summerstrand practice for hearing assessments with Audiologist Anri van Onselen today. Hearing tests are pain free and the results are available immediately. Even mom went into the sound booth during the tests😀. Photos shared with consent.

In this photo (shared with permission) our audiologist Anri is performing cochlear implant mapping. Our profoundly deafened patient is listening to electrical stimulation presented to her hearing implant to set the correct hearing levels for every day use.

Cochlear implant mapping is the process of programming and fine-tuning a cochlear implant to best suit the individual user’s hearing needs. It is typically done by an audiologist and is a key part of the rehabilitation process after cochlear implant surgery.

What Happens During Mapping?
Mapping involves setting the electrical stimulation levels for each electrode in the implant. These settings control how sound is translated into electrical signals that stimulate the auditory nerve. The goal is to create a clear, comfortable, and useful perception of sound.

Why Mapping Is Important:
• Everyone responds differently to electrical stimulation.
• The auditory nerve may take time to adapt.
• Mapping needs to change over time as the brain adjusts to hearing with the implant.
• Sounds may seem strange or robotic at first.
• Mapping helps refine and improve clarity over time.

Dear patients with short hairstyles: discrete behind-the-ear hearing aids are available for your consideration. Our patient pictured below expressed concern that her new hearing aids would be highly visible due to her short hair. She was pleasantly surprised by the outcome 😀. It is a privilege to support our patients with hearing aids who reside in retirement villages in Summerstrand and Humewood. Limited transportation options are a challenge for many of our patients, who appreciate our staff's on-site hearing aid maintenance and cleaning services. Anri, our audiologist, and Charmaine, our patient care coordinator, will conduct monthly visits to these facilities.

What drives our enthusiasm for school hearing screening tests? The test is: ✅ pain free ✅ easy to administer ✅ gives immediate results. An undiagnosed hearing loss can be an invisible obstacle to a child’s ability to hear the teacher well in the classroom, learn new things, and affect their confidence and socializing. Thank you, St. Augustine’s Primary School teachers, for allowing us to screen your grade 1 learner’s hearing again this year.
