Meningococcal Disease

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) or septicemia (blood infection), both of which can be life-threatening.

Signs & Symptoms:
Symptoms typically develop quickly and may include:
Meningitis:
• Sudden fever
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck
• Nausea or vomiting
• Sensitivity to light
• Confusion
• Seizures
Septicemia (meningococcemia):
• Fever and chills
• Fatigue
• Cold hands and feet
• Rapid breathing
• Purplish rash (non-blanching)
• Shock and multi-organ failure (in severe cases)

In infants: poor feeding, irritability, bulging fontanelle (soft spot), and lethargy.

Diagnosis:
• Blood tests and lumbar puncture (to test cerebrospinal fluid for bacteria)
• Rapid diagnostic tests and cultures
• PCR testing may also be used for confirmation

Treatment:
• Immediate hospitalization and IV antibiotics (e.g., ceftriaxone or penicillin)
• Supportive care (oxygen, fluids, etc.)
• Early treatment is crucial to reduce complications or death

Prevention:
• Vaccination is the best prevention (e.g. Menactra)
• Close contacts of a confirmed case may need antibiotic prophylaxis (e.g., rifampicin or ciprofloxacin)
• Good hygiene practices (handwashing, covering coughs/sneezes) help reduce spread
• Avoiding close contact with infected individuals when possible

if you suspect you have had close contact with a person who had Meningococcus, contact your doctor immediately. Hostels and creches are a particular risk.

Meningococcal disease can progress rapidly. Early recognition and treatment are critical.

VACANCY: Debtors Manager (based in Newton Park, PE)

The Debtors Manager will be responsible for managing and overseeing the entire accounts receivable function, including, but not limited to, managing the billing process, monitoring and collecting payments, and maintaining accurate records of accounts receivable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage the debtors’ team
• Oversee the work of Medical Aids Supervisor
• Monitor staff accounts for overdue balances.
• Monitor IBT accounts for overdue balances.
• Compile outstanding debtors reports monthly.
• Opening of wholesaler accounts and maintaining digital copies of application documents for inspection purposes.
• Authorise opening of accounts.
• Opening staff accounts.
• Monitoring of standard account age analysis
• Engaging with team to overcome any challenges in attempting to collect the debt or for explanations on abnormal target ratio fluctuations.
• Assisting team to hand over bad debt.
• Authorise along with store manager the write-off of irrecoverable debt.
• Monitoring outstanding COD’s and team assistance to stores.
• Monitoring outstanding script tracking and team assistance to stores.
• Monthly write-offs: x levy/stock acc write-offs
• Monthly Debtors meetings

REQUIREMENTS:
• Completed National Diploma in Accounting or Finance related field
• Minimum of 5 experience in a similar position
• Experience working in Accounting / Financial Management and Debtors Management
• Experience in Unisolv, Pastel Partner and Positill
• Strong people management skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Child immunisations, flu vaccines & family planning
• Cholesterol, glucose, PSA, TB, HIV, Haemoglobin and Blood Pressure testing.
• Wound care, ear syringe procedures.
• Order and receive clinic stock.
• Record fridge temperature & maintain the cold chain.
• Daily registers of clients and record keeping.
• Keep clinic neat and tidy, filing & reports up to date.
• Assist with ad hoc off-site requests for vaccinations.
• Attend training.
• Market the clinic.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Professional Nurse registered with Nursing Council
• Current experience as a clinic sister/nurse
• Must be computer literate
