One of the most important questions we ask during a hearing assessment is:
Do you have a history of noise exposure?

Long-term noise exposure, whether in the office, through music, or in everyday situations, can gradually impact hearing.

Examples include:
• Working with machines or tools.
• Frequent exposure to loud music.
• Regular time spent in high-noise areas.

Noise-related hearing changes usually happen gradually and may go undetected until conversation becomes more difficult.

Hearing loss caused by noise is often gradual and cumulative, going unnoticed.

Repeated exposure to sounds that exceed permissible levels can harm the sensitive structures of the inner ear. Once damaged, these structures do not regenerate.
Over time, this could lead to:
• Problems understanding speech
• Sensitivity to sound
• Constant ringing in the ears.

Because these changes occur gradually, many people become aware of them only after their usual communication is impacted.
Protecting your hearing early on is critical to preserving long-term hearing health.

A common misconception is that hearing loss is only about volume.
In reality, it’s often about clarity.

When hearing changes occur, certain speech sounds become harder to distinguish, especially in noisy environments. This can make conversations feel unclear even when sounds are loud enough.

Hearing technology today is designed to enhance speech clarity by focusing on important frequencies and reducing background noise helping you understand, not just hear.

If conversations are becoming more difficult to follow, a hearing assessment can provide valuable insight.

Because hearing plays a crucial role in early brain and speech development, testing a baby’s hearing before 6 weeks of age is very important.

Even before birth, a baby’s brain is already learning to recognise sounds, voices, and the patterns of language. Early access to sound helps build the foundations for communication, learning, and social development.

When hearing is tested early, any concerns can be identified and supported as soon as possible, allowing babies the best opportunity to develop their listening and communication skills. 👶👂

After fitting an assistive hearing device we recommend:
1. Consult a speech- language pathologist for aural rehabilitation and auditory training

2. Keeping open communication with teachers and your audiologist to monitor changes at school and at home.

3. Regular follow-up visits to ensure the device continues to function optimally for your child’s hearing needs and lifestyle.

Staying current with innovation is part of how we deliver the best possible care 👂

We recently attended the launch of the long-awaited Widex Allure hearing instrument range, hosted by WSA at Ashanti Estate in Paarl on Tuesday, 16 March 2026.

Advancements in hearing technology continue to evolve around one key focus, your listening experience. Understanding patient preferences and how individuals interact with sound allows us to recommend solutions that are both effective and comfortable.

We value the level of research, detail and innovation that goes into developing hearing technology designed to help you hear your world more clearly.

Hearing damage is influenced by both volume and duration of exposure. Even sounds at moderate levels can cause harm if your ears are exposed for long periods without time to recover. Ways to protect your hearing:
• Everyday environments such as traffic, gyms, restaurants, headphones, and machinery all contribute to your overall noise exposure. Give your ears regular periods of quiet time, to recover.
• Wear ear protection in environments with consistent noise levels above 85 dB, such as when using power tools or attending concerts.
• Noise-cancelling headphones can help reduce the need to increase the volume when listening in noisy environments.
• Maintain distance from the sound source whenever possible.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) often develops gradually, which means it can go unnoticed until communication becomes more difficult.

No, appropriately fitted and well maintained hearing aids cannot make your hearing worse.

Their role is to stimulate the brain and help it make sense of sound, keeping the auditory system active and engaged.

So what happens when you take them out?
When you remove your hearing aids after wearing them consistently, everything suddenly sounds quieter and more muffled than before. This doesn’t mean your hearing has worsened, it’s simply because your brain has adjusted to hearing more clearly with the aids in.
