What Happens During a Prostate MRI?

Wondering what to expect? We’re here to help you feel informed and at ease — every step of the way.

A prostate MRI is a safe, non-invasive scan that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of the prostate. It helps doctors detect conditions like prostate cancer, inflammation, or enlargement — early and accurately.

- No radiation
- No pain
- No incisions

You’ll lie on a motorised bed that gently slides into the MRI scanner. It’s important to remain still while the images are taken. A contrast injection forms part of the procedure to help enhance image quality for accurate diagnosis.

And don’t worry — our caring radiographer will guide you step by step and monitor you throughout the entire scan.

What Happens During a CT Scan? | Bayradiology

It’s completely natural to want to understand what a CT scan involves — it’s a quick and relatively non-invasive way for us to get a detailed look inside your body.

A CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses X-rays and computer technology to create cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues. This helps your doctor make accurate diagnoses and plan the most appropriate treatment.

CT scans are commonly used to:

- Detect injuries or internal bleeding

- Evaluate the brain for strokes or tumours

- Examine the lungs and chest

- Assess fractures or bone abnormalities

- Monitor cancers and guide certain treatments

- Perform CT Colonography (also called virtual colonoscopy), a minimally invasive exam used to screen for colon-related conditions — suitable for selected patients as identified by the referring specialist

During your scan, you’ll lie on a narrow, firm scanning bed that slowly moves through a large, doughnut-shaped scanner. In some cases, a contrast dye may be used to highlight certain areas — this could be given by injection or other methods, and our team will explain everything clearly beforehand.

Our compassionate radiographers will guide you through each step to help you feel as informed and at ease as possible throughout the process.

What Happens During an MRI?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures — with no exposure to radiation.

During the scan, you will lie on a motorised bed that gently moves into a large, tunnel-shaped scanner. It’s important to remain still to ensure clear images. The procedure is completely painless, and you’ll be in constant communication with the radiographer throughout.

MRI is commonly used to evaluate the brain, spine, joints, abdomen, and soft tissues, helping doctors diagnose a wide range of medical conditions with accuracy and confidence.

Dear Valued Discovery Health Member,

We understand your concern and appreciate the opportunity to provide clarity regarding the recent R250 levy.

As communicated, this levy applies specifically to patients on Discovery Health-administered medical aids, due to ongoing challenges related to Discovery’s below-inflation tariff increases for radiology services — particularly a 2% increase for two consecutive years. In contrast, other medical schemes have implemented increases more in line with inflation.

Such limited adjustments are not sustainable in view of the rising costs associated with providing radiology services.

Please be assured that this decision was not taken lightly. At Bayradiology, our priority remains delivering high-quality, professional care, while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of our services.

We remain committed to transparency and patient-centred care, and we welcome the opportunity to engage with you directly should you have any further questions or concerns.

Kind regards,
The Bayradiology Team

Prioritising Patient-Centred Breast Imaging at Bayradiology.

Bayradiology is committed to supporting early detection and breast health awareness through high-quality diagnostic imaging delivered in a professional, respectful, and patient-focused environment.

Our facilities make use of digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), a technique that enhances image clarity and supports accurate interpretation. Mammograms and breast ultrasounds are performed by qualified mammographers and sonographers, with all studies thoroughly reviewed and reported on by radiologists who have expertise in women’s imaging.

All our patient's studies are securely stored which allows for very important comparisons with previous studies, helping to detect subtle changes over time.

When clinically indicated we are equipped to perform stereotactic breast biopsies with minimal discomfort to the patient.

Bayradiology remains focused on:

- Supporting clinical decision-making with quality imaging
- Maintaining patient comfort, dignity, and privacy
- Clear communication with referring doctors
- Minimising delays wherever possible

Because at Bayradiology, your health and peace of mind come first.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO DISCOVERY HEALTH-ADMINISTERED FUND MEMBERS

Patients on Discovery Health-administered medical aids are advised of a new R250 levy, implemented in response to Discovery’s continued minimal tariff increases for radiology services.

This levy applies per modality, including: Mammogram, Bone Density, MRI, CT, Ultrasound and General Radiology.

Effective from 1 June 2025, this amount is in addition to any existing co-payments required by Discovery Health for specialised scans and procedures.

The R250 per modality must be paid upfront on the day of your examination.
