Medical Forum Theatre – the Eastern Cape’s first private day hospital – has a longstanding history within the metro. Founded during the 1960’s by Dr Johan du Toit (now retired), its legacy continues to avail general theatre space to other medical practitioners for day case surgeries. The team of medical professionals at the Eye and Laser Institute set out to create a Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmology care in the Eastern Cape through the Eye and Laser Institute, with a strong focus on day surgery.

“The entire value chain is focused on efficiency and quality nursing care,” said Dr Andries Marais, managing director. Uncompromising service and high quality nursing care ensures that patients are discharged within three to four hours, depending on the procedure. In addition to the ease of not having to stay for a long period of time, patients also find the experience of entering the Medical Forum Theatre less daunting than a large hospital. In the spirit of giving back and making a difference, Dr Grobler (Bay Urology - Urologist) approached Advanced Health to assist in providing patients currently on the public sector waiting list with access to much-needed surgical care.

Together with Dr Schmidt (Anaesthetist) and the dedicated Advanced MFT team, Dr Grobler performed five surgeries at our facility in honour of this important day.

The main function of the Eustachian tube is to equalize the air pressure in the middle ear with the pressure from the outside, since it connects the middle ear with the back of the nose and the upper part of throat. It also helps to drain fluids from the middle ear Inside the ear…… The problems with ear pressure equalization are often caused by the Eustachian tube not opening properly. This is called “tube ventilation dysfunction” or “eustachian tube dysfunction”

📣 Meet Dr. Gérard Grobler

Dr. Grobler earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of the Free State in 2011. During his Community Service year at Knysna Provincial Hospital, he also obtained his Diploma in Primary Emergency Care from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Since then, he has gained extensive experience across multiple disciplines, including ICU, general surgery, and urology. In 2023, he achieved his Fellowship in Urology (FC Urol SA) and completed his MMed in Urology from Stellenbosch University in 2024.
Dr. Grobler has a special interest in oncology, reconstruction, infertility, and advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is passionate about delivering world-class urological care and remains committed to continuous learning through academic and surgical training.

In 2024, Dr. Grobler established Bay Urology Urology as a general urology practice. He is now expanding with an exciting new venture at his relocated premises at 215 Cape Road, Mill Park, Gqeberha.
