As 2023 closes, 2024 brings hope, love and light!

The parents, babies, children, nurses, doctors and other health professionals that we have had the fortune of interacting with, are all truly amazing. Every single one of them brought something into our role of being a/their dietitian. Each year that passes brings new challenges and interesting cases. We learn new literature and grow within our profession. We develop within our roles as dietitians but also as mothers to our own children. Thank you for trusting us and choosing us to be part of your nutritional journey.

We would like to commend all parents for being your child’s number one! For showing up, doing your best and for loving your little one! Parenting is hard, there is no job quite like it and nothing can prepare you to become a mom or a dad. We encourage you to LOVE , DREAM, ask questions and most importantly forgive. Let 2024 be your year! Surround yourselves with a positive support group of friends and family. After all it takes a village to raise a child 😀. May this year be a healthy and happy one for you all!

Much love Robyn and Michele

What a privilege it was to be invited to, and a part of, such an informative event!
Invaluable knowledge by all the presenters, and very blessed to work alongside such a brilliant team of individuals. A special shout out to Robyn Rose Potgieter for presenting on “prioritising nutrition in the preterm infant” and for spreading our passion for these tiny humans 💜 .

Are you a coffee drinker? No judgement- I sure am. Like seriously, do NOT talk to me before I've had my first cup of coffee! (For your safety and mine! 😅)

Parents of newborns are up all night- for some of you folks, coffee is an essential tool for the day. But there's so many different things that says "a nursing parent CANNOT drink coffee or anything with caffeine!"

But you know what? According to the National Library of Medicine (aka LactMed) there is "Insufficient high-quality data available to make good evidence-based recommendations on safe maternal caffeine consumption."

Now, this doesn't mean I'm telling you to go guzzle down 15 cups of coffee and 4 cokes! No way! First of all you'd spend your entire day in the bathroom. Drinking caffeine is OKAY, but only in moderations! Let's pick a safe number, more like 4ish cups of coffee a day.

"A... intake limit of 300 to 500 mg daily might be a safe level of intake for most {lactating people}. However, preterm and younger newborn infants metabolize caffeine very slowly and may have serum levels of caffeine and other active caffeine metabolites similar to their {parent's} levels, so a lower intake level is preferable in the {nursing parent} of these infants. Other sources of caffeine, such as cola and energy drinks, yerba mate or guarana, will have similar dose-related effects on the breastfed infant. Coffee intake of more than 450 mL daily may decrease breastmilk iron concentrations and result in mild iron deficiency anemia in some breastfed infants."

So go ahead! Grab that Iced Chocolate Almond milk Shaken Espresso. You deserve it! 😉

We are excited and honoured to be apart of The Play Pod! A one of a kind Pediatric Centre in Port Elizabeth!

2022, let this be a year where our kiddies thrive in all aspects of development👏🏻

Introducing our Dietitians! 👶🍏🍼👶

Michele and Robyn, both have special interest in pediatric nutrition and food allergies. It was this common interest that brought them together to start their joint venture as Mandis & Rose Dietitians. They worked together at a government Pediatric hospital for many years, but it was becoming parents themselves, and seeing the world of misinformation often received by new mom’s and dad’s, that they decided to open their private practice in 2015. They see patients in St Georges, Greenacres and Mercantile hospitals on referral from the pediatricians, other specialists and health professionals. They also see patients in their office at St Georges, and now at The Play Pod too.

Robyn and Michele provide parents with the nutritional tools to ensure their little ones thrive. They consult with moms of infants to guide them with milk feeding, whether it be choosing the best formula for their baby or with the challenges of breast feeding. Introduction to solids as well, as Toddler meal planning and lunch box ideas are also covered during their consultations. They teach parents how to manage ‘Picky Eaters’ and work closely with parents of children with poor growth. They ensure a well-balanced intake is maintained while patients are on exclusion diets, due to food allergies and intolerances, and also see many families moving to a plant-based lifestyles.
They tackle childhood obesity, Type 1 Diabetes and deal with specific nutrition related diseases like Iron Deficiency.
Michele & Robyn work together with the medical team on many other illnesses like Cerebral Palsy, Cystic Fibrosis, heart conditions, Liver and renal disease and these children are all a very special part of their practice.

Children are most receptive at a young age, thus early intervention is critical in preventing bad eating habits and molding future lifestyle choices.
They are both confident that providing parents with the latest, scientific advice and resources is the key to achieving success. Their belief that nutrition is the best foundation to optimal health is the driving force of their practice.

A true little champion ... Keep growing & thriving Willem 💙

Weighing just more than a kilogram, a baby boy who underwent major heart surgery came out a champion on Wednesday when he was finally released from Life St George's Hospital after an agonising 120 days.

*** Fun Facts ***

💬“If my baby is lactose intolerant am I still able to Breastfeed?”.. this is one of the most common questions in a moms early breastfeeding journey but one that so often gets answered completely incorrectly.

It is important to know that all infants are born with an immature gut which has minimal levels of Lactase enzyme (the enzyme which breaks down lactose), this enzyme increases as their gut matures over the weeks to come. Slight abdominal discomfort and cramping caused by winds and flatulence are all very common and quite normal “symptoms” due to this “immature Gut”. We definitely do not want to remove lactose from their diets at this stage because the lactose is a very important “ingredient” in their gut health... helping feed the natural healthy gut flora & also assisting with calcium absorption as they grow and develop.

Colic is the unexplained crying which also happens in these early days... and so very often crying babies are mistakenly “diagnosed” with Lactose intolerance instead of understanding the “norms” of infancy.

Yes we can all have “transient lactose intolerance” which occurs after a bad bout of gastro but after a few days your lactose enzyme slowly rebuilds to normal levels and lactose should be re-added into the diet if it was eliminated.

Surprisingly the chances of Lactose intolerance due to a minimal amount of lactose enzyme production is more common in adulthood than in infancy, as our lactase enzyme often decreases as we age.

❌True, life-long, lactose intolerance (Galactosemia) is a very rare and life threatening congenital condition which will not be outgrown.. lactose in even trace amounts needs to be avoided in these very uncommon situations.

🤱 So to answer this question... Yes, you can and should continue breastfeeding. No change in your diet will remove the lactose from your breastmilk (i.e. a mom with a cows milk free diet still produces Breastmilk containing lactose).
🍼And a formula fed infant would probably need short term formula adjustments.

But Most importantly, if you are struggling with an unhappy infant and think it is due to feed choice (breast or formula), please do contact your dietitian before making any feed changes 🤍🤍🤍
