Abbreviated biography Dr AJ. Magan

I completed my undergraduate degree in Medicine and surgery at the University of Transkei in 2002. During my time as a young impressionable scholar I was always captivated by the geography that circumscribed my existence – abject socioeconomic poverty nestled amidst a swathe of absolute natural seemingly boundless beauty.

I did my internship at King Edward hospital in Durban, at the time one of the busiest academic teaching hospitals in the country. Community service was completed the following year at Church of Scotland Hospital in rural KZN. I spent a lot of time doing community Psychiatry, a service that was desperately in need of resuscitation. The gratification of the services rendered encouraged me to pursue a post graduate diploma in Psychiatry which I completed during my community service!

My love for being hands on and the desire for instant surgical gratifcation spurred me on to join the Department of Orthopaedics at UkZn under the excellent leadership of Prof S Govender; six years later completing my Fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery.

I heeded a call from my Alma Mater now known as Walter Sisulu University in 2012 as a Senior Lecturer. Being the first South African Board certified Orthopedic Surgeon to work in the former Transkei and Ciskei I realized there was a huge need for Orthopedic services in both the state and private sectors. This prompted me to start private practice at Life St Mary’s and Life Queenstown private hospitals.

Currently the practice centers on the various disciplines within Orthopaedics such as Trauma, Sports Medicine, Arthroplasty and Spine Surgery.

The practice has a wide referral base from the wild coast to the Maluti Mountains and strives to afford quality healthcare through science and technology.
