Following our Movember post, today we’re highlighting a key men’s health screening: the PSA test.

🔍 What is PSA?

PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen — a protein made by the prostate gland.
A PSA test measures the level of this protein in the blood and forms part of assessing prostate health.

Who should consider a PSA test?

* Men 50+
* Men 45+ with a family history of prostate cancer
* Anyone experiencing urinary changes or concerns

Why is PSA important?

This test helps detect potential prostate problems early, often before symptoms appear. Early awareness means better treatment options and better outcomes.

(Commonly referred to as a kidney function test)

𝐓𝐡𝐲𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬

Sometimes, the thyroid is affected by the immune system. That’s where thyroid antibody tests come in.

These blood tests look for antibodies that may be attacking the thyroid gland. They help us detect autoimmune thyroid conditions such as:
✔ Hashimoto’s disease (often linked to underactive thyroid)
✔ Graves’ disease (often linked to overactive thyroid)

The most common thyroid antibodies tested include:
• TPO antibodies (Thyroid peroxidase antibodies)
• TG antibodies (Thyroglobulin antibodies)

Why it matters: Even if TSH, T4 and T3 look normal, thyroid antibodies can show early signs of thyroid problems or explain ongoing symptoms.

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck, but it has a big job: it contributes to controlling your energy, metabolism, and even your mood.

That’s why doctors often check these thyroid markers:

✔ TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone):
The “messenger” from the brain telling your thyroid how much hormone to make.

✔ T4 (Thyroxine):
The main hormone your thyroid produces. It’s like stored energy.

✔ T3 (Triiodothyronine):
The active form of thyroid hormone that your body actually uses. Your thyroid produces some T3, but the rest is converted from T4.

CRP stands for C-reactive protein. It’s a substance your liver makes when there is inflammation in your body.

A CRP blood test is commonly referred to as an “infection marker”, because it rises when your body is fighting an infection or when there is inflammation.

✔ CRP doesn’t tell us exactly where the problem is, but it’s an important clue that helps doctors know when something in your body is not right.
✔ It can support the diagnosis of infections, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, and even heart health concerns.

💡 A high CRP = your body is likely fighting an infection or there is a source of inflammation

When little ones have a blocked nose or airway infection, they can struggle to breathe, feed, and sleep. Suctioning is a gentle medical technique where a soft tube or bulb is used to carefully remove excess mucus from a baby’s nose or throat.

Why it helps:
• Clears the airways so your baby can breathe easier
• Improves feeding (babies need clear noses to latch and suck properly)
• Promotes more restful sleep
• Helps prevent further complications from trapped mucus
