Why early stimulation matters and how you can make a difference.

The earliest moments in your baby’s life lay the foundation for everything that follows. For preterm babies especially, gentle early stimulation isn’t “extra”, it’s essential.

Simple, loving actions like touch, soft talking, skin-to-skin contact, and meeting your baby’s gaze when they’re calm can:
- Support healthy brain development
- Improve muscle tone and movement
- Strengthen bonding and emotional security

But knowing what to do and how to do it safely and confidently, makes all the difference.

Our book was created to guide parents and caregivers step by step through practical, evidence-informed early stimulation techniques designed especially for premature babies.

It’s gentle, reassuring, and easy to follow, helping you turn everyday moments into powerful opportunities for growth and connection.

If you want to feel confident supporting your baby’s development from the very beginning, this book (and our workshops) will walk the journey with you, one loving step at a time.

Because little steps make a big difference.

When progress feels slow. Progress with a premature baby is rarely linear.

There will be days that feel hopeful and days that feel like a step backwards. Both are part of the journey. Growth often happens quietly, beneath the surface, long before it’s visible.

Be kind to yourself on the hard days. You’re learning alongside your baby and that learning takes time.

Support, education, and reassurance can make this journey feel lighter. That’s why Little Steps focuses on empowering parents through understanding, not pressure.

Skin-to-skin contact is far more than a tender bonding moment, it plays a vital role in a baby’s physical, neurological, and emotional development.

Also known as kangaroo care, this practice helps regulate a baby’s breathing, heart rate, temperature, and blood sugar levels. For premature and newborn babies especially, skin-to-skin contact supports brain development and creates a sense of safety in an unfamiliar world.

For parents, these moments offer calm, reassurance, and confidence, reminding you that your presence is powerful, even when you feel unsure or overwhelmed.

Our workshops guide parents on how and when to practise skin-to-skin safely and confidently, helping both baby and parent feel more connected and at ease.

🌸 Pregnancy Awareness Week 🌸

Pregnancy is often spoken about as a joyful, glowing journey, but for many parents, it can also be filled with uncertainty, fear, and unanswered questions.

This week, we honour every pregnancy story, the smooth ones, the complicated ones, and those that don’t follow the “expected” path.

We acknowledge the emotional load parents carry, the strength it takes to keep going, and the importance of support, understanding, and honest conversations throughout pregnancy.

At Little Steps, we stand with parents who face unexpected challenges, including premature birth and NICU journeys. You are not alone — your feelings are valid, and support matters.

For parents and healthcare professionals seeking guidance and reassurance:
“Prematurity – Adjusting Your Dream” by Prof Welma Lubbe offers compassionate insight, practical support, and hope for families navigating prematurity and beyond.

Having a premature baby can turn your world upside down, and with it come many fears and misconceptions. Let’s separate myth from facts.

💡 Did you know?
Prof Welma Lubbe has written Prematurity – Adjusting your dream, a compassionate and comprehensive guide created to support parents through the emotional and practical realities of prematurity.

For many families, having trusted guidance can make this journey feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more hopeful.

You are not alone, and support is always within reach.

Feeding a premature baby can bring up many questions and often, many worries.

Unlike full-term babies, preemies may tire easily, struggle with coordination, or need extra time to develop feeding skills. This doesn’t mean something is wrong, it means their bodies are still learning.

Understanding why feeding looks different helps parents move from anxiety to patience. When feeding is guided by your baby’s cues rather than rigid expectations, it becomes a calmer, more nurturing experience for both of you.

📘 In our book, we break down feeding in a way that is reassuring, realistic, and rooted in development, so parents feel informed rather than overwhelmed.

If today feels heavy, pause for a moment.

You don’t need to have all the answers.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You only need to keep showing up and you already are.

Premature parenting often comes with uncertainty and self-doubt, especially when progress feels slow or unpredictable, but growth doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s found in tiny victories: a calm feed, a longer cuddle, a peaceful nap.

Every small step matters. Every loving moment counts.

Little Steps exists to remind parents that they are capable, supported, and not walking this journey alone.

Prematurity – Adjusting Your Dream.

When your baby arrives earlier than expected, everything changes. The dreams you held so close may suddenly feel uncertain, and the journey ahead overwhelming. Prematurity – Adjusting Your Dream was written to support parents through this unexpected path with understanding, compassion, and gentle guidance.

This book speaks to the emotional realities of prematurity - the NICU experience, the fears, the hope, and the quiet strength parents discover along the way. It reminds you that while your journey may look different, it is still meaningful, powerful, and filled with love.

You don’t have to navigate prematurity alone.
Prematurity – Adjusting Your Dream walks beside you, one small step at a time.

No parent imagines beginning their journey in a NICU.

The machines, the alarms, the waiting, the constant wondering if you’re doing enough, it can feel overwhelming in ways words can’t fully explain.

If you’re parenting a premature baby, please know this: what you’re feeling is normal. Fear and love often live side by side in these early days.

You may feel strong one moment and completely unsure the next and that doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you care deeply.

Premature babies experience the world differently. Their needs, cues, and development don’t always follow the “typical” parenting advice you see online and that’s where understanding truly matters.

At Little Steps, we focus on helping parents understand their baby, not compare them. When you know what’s normal for your baby, fear slowly turns into confidence, one small step at a time.

If you’d like gentle, expert guidance during this season, our book and online workshops are designed to support you through every stage of prematurity.
