It’s easy to forget. On our worst days, when life feels heavy, uncertain, or broken, we tend to be quick to recognize our need for God. We may pray more. We might ask for help. We reach for hope. Desperation has a way of stripping away illusions of control and reminding us that we are not enough on our own.
But what about our best days?
When the plans come together, the prayers are answered, and life feels like it’s clicking into place, how quickly can we start believing the lie that we’ve got this on our own. That we’re in control. That we’re totally self-sufficient.
The truth is we need God just as much on the mountaintop as we do in the valley.
The temptation is to think, “I needed God when I was struggling, but now that things are good, I can coast.” Yet the same grace that sustained you at your lowest is the grace that sustains you at your highest.
Our best days don’t make us any less dependent. Our worst days don’t make us any less loved.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, NIV)
Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
Not just when we’re failing, but also when we’re succeeding. Not just when we’re hurting, but also when we’re thriving.
Because the goal has never been just survival. It’s always been abiding.
Abiding in the One who gives life and purpose.
Abiding in the One who is faithful when we are faithless.
Abiding in the One who loves us not because of what we do, but because of who He is.
So I pray I never forget:
That on my best day, I still need God as desperately as I did on my worst day.
And the good news is His grace is there for both.
