Based on the World Health Organization's theme "Invest in breastfeeding, invest in the future," here are three benefits of breadtfeeding;

1. Breastfeeding is a cornerstone of public health. It provides a baby with ideal nutrition and vital antibodies, which help protect against a wide range of illnesses, including infections, diarrhea, and respiratory diseases. This leads to fewer doctor visits, hospitalizations, and a significant reduction in healthcare expenditures for families and health systems. The WHO highlights that increasing breastfeeding rates could prevent hundreds of thousands of child deaths each year.

2. Breastfeeding is linked to long-term benefits in cognitive development. Children who are breastfed tend to perform better on intelligence tests, achieve higher levels of education, and, as a result, earn higher wages as adults. By supporting breastfeeding, societies are investing in their future workforce, leading to stronger economies and a more productive population.

3. Breastfeeding isn't just about the baby's health; it also has significant benefits for the mother. It helps a mother's uterus return to its normal size more quickly after birth and reduces the risk of postpartum depression. Critically, the WHO points out that breastfeeding lowers a woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers, as well as type 2 diabetes, leading to a healthier population of mothers and a reduction in the long-term healthcare burden associated with these diseases.

The two-day TB Vaccine Preparedness Workshop (23-24 Juy) concluded today in Sandton, Johannesburg, with a keynote address by Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi. In closing the event, the Minister urged that the workshop mark the beginning of a new chapter: “Let this not be the end of a workshop, but the beginning of a new chapter where TB prevention through vaccination becomes the order of the day.”

Key outcomes from the workshop included:

- Commitment from the Department of Health to introduce, finance, and deliver a future TB vaccine in South Africa.

- A multisectoral task team will lead efforts across regulation, evidence generation, delivery, financing, and community trust-building.

- Community engagement was highlighted as a moral imperative for success.

- Vaccine readiness was emphasised, with the Minister stating, “We are morally obligated to prepare, so that when science delivers, our systems and our people are ready.”

Prof. Norbert Ndjeka, Chief Director for TB Control and Management at the National Department of Health, reaffirmed the Department's commitment to a robust, equitable, and integrated rollout strategy.
