The best medicine is right outside your door!🌿🌍

Happy Earth Day!🌳 Beyond being a day to care for our planet, it’s the perfect reminder of how much nature cares for our children.

In paediatrics, we often talk about the power of "Vitamin G" (Green Time). 🍃 Spending time in nature isn’t just a luxury, it is a vital tool for healthy physical and mental development. From the smallest toddlers to our busy teenagers, getting outdoors has a profound effect on the developing brain.✨🧠

Why "Vitamin G" is essential:

😴Better Sleep for Toddlers:
Exposure to natural sunlight and physical play in the fresh air helps regulate a child’s internal clock, making bedtime much smoother.💤🌙

🧘‍♂️Reduced Anxiety in Older Kids:
Nature acts as a natural stress-reliever. For school-aged children and teens, "unplugging" and stepping into green spaces helps lower cortisol levels and reduces feelings of overwhelm.🧘‍♀️✨

🎨Boosted Creativity:
Nature is the ultimate sensory playground, encouraging imaginative play and problem-solving skills that indoor environments can’t replicate.🐜🌼

Today, let’s celebrate Earth Day by getting our kids outside, even if it’s just for 15 minutes in the garden or a walk around the block.🏃‍♂️🌷

🧠Brain Food for Better Learning!🍎

Smart snacking isn't just about filling tummies, it’s about fueling focus! Providing the right nutrients during the school day helps stabilize energy levels and keeps young minds sharp for those big classroom moments.📝✨

Here are 5 snacks that are easy to pack and great for concentration:

1️⃣ Greek Yoghurt & Berries: A perfect mix of protein for sustained energy and antioxidants for brain health. 🍓
2️⃣ Apple Slices with Nut Butter: The fiber in the apple and healthy fats in the butter prevent that mid-morning "sugar crash."🍏🥜
3️⃣ Boiled Eggs: A powerhouse of choline, which is essential for memory and cognitive development.🥚💪
4️⃣ Hummus & Veggie Sticks: Chickpeas provide steady energy, while crunchy carrots or cucumbers keep them hydrated.🥕🥑
5️⃣ Mixed Raw Seeds & Nuts: A quick hit of Omega-3s and Zinc to support focus and mood.🌻🌰

Small changes in the lunchbox can make a big difference in how your child learns and feels throughout the day! 🎒🌟

What is your child’s go-to healthy snack?

💊It’s time for a Medicine Cabinet Reset!🧼

Whether you are doing some spring cleaning or autumn tidying, April is the perfect month to perform a Safety Audit of your home’s medicine cabinet.🏠✨

As a parent, your medicine chest is your first line of defense, but an unmanaged cabinet can lead to ineffective treatment or even accidental danger.🛑🚑

Here is your 3-step audit checklist:

⏳Check the Dates: Look through your essentials like Panado, Nurofen, and allergy syrups. If they are past their expiry date, they may lose their effectiveness or even become harmful. Dispose of them safely!

🧴Inspect Opened Syrups: Many paediatric syrups have a limited shelf life once the seal is broken (often only 1–6 months). If you can’t remember when you opened it, it’s safer to replace it.🧪

🔐Safe Storage: Ensure all medications are stored in a cool, dry place, well out of reach (and sight) of curious little hands. A locked box or a high shelf is always best.🪜🚫🧒

A quick check today ensures you’re ready to care for your little ones safely when they need it most.🩺💙

When was the last time you checked your expiry dates?
Let’s get organized this week!

☀️Great health starts with great play!

As the season changes, it’s the perfect time to head outdoors. While it looks like "just fun," outdoor play is a critical part of your child’s physical and mental development.🌳

When children climb, jump, and run, they are working on their gross motor skills, the large muscle movements that build strength, balance, and coordination. These simple playground activities lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy movement.⚽🧗‍♀️

Why get outside today?
💪Physical Strength: Climbing and hanging build core and upper body strength.
🧠Brain Boost: Movement improves focus, mood, and cognitive function.
⚖️Better Balance: Navigating uneven ground and play equipment hones coordination.
😴Improved Sleep: Natural light and physical exertion help regulate sleep patterns.

Whether it’s a trip to the local park or a game of tag in the garden, every bit of movement counts toward a healthier future.🌈

Moving beyond awareness toward true acceptance. 💙

April is Autism Acceptance Month. While awareness helps us recognize the signs, acceptance creates a world where every child can thrive exactly as they are.

Early intervention is one of the greatest gifts we can give. By identifying developmental needs early, we can provide the specific support and tools a child needs to navigate the world with confidence.

Early Milestone Checklist:
📍 Responding to their name by 12 months.
📍 Using gestures (pointing/waving) by 14 months.
📍 Engaging in "pretend" play by 18 months.
📍 Maintaining consistent eye contact during interaction.

Every child develops at their own pace, but if you have questions about your child’s unique journey, let’s start the conversation.

🛡️RSV Breakthrough: New Protection for South African Babies in 2026!

We have some incredibly positive news to share! RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) has long been a leading cause of lung infections in infants, but as of early 2026, we have two powerful new tools available right here in South Africa to protect our little ones.

After years of local clinical trials, these treatments have moved from "experimental" to "available." Here is what you need to know:

1. The Maternal Vaccine (Abrysvo)🤰
This is a single dose given to pregnant moms (ideally between weeks 28 and 36).

How it works: You develop antibodies that pass to your baby, giving them "passive immunity" from the moment they are born.

The Impact: It has been shown to be over 80% effective at preventing severe RSV infections in a baby’s first 90 days.

Status: Available now in the private sector, with recommendations for a public sector rollout currently underway!

2. The Infant "One-and-Done" Shield (Beyfortus)👶
Registered by SAHPRA in January 2026, this is a game-changer for the current RSV season.

How it works: It isn't a traditional vaccine; it’s a long-acting antibody that provides "ready-made" protection directly to the infant.

The Benefit: Unlike older treatments that required monthly shots, this is a single injection that protects your baby for at least five months, covering the entire RSV season!

Who is it for? It’s designed for all infants entering their first RSV season, not just those at high risk.

Why this matters to our community:
RSV season in South Africa typically kicks off around February/March. With these new options, we can significantly reduce hospital visits and keep our babies breathing easier.

🩺Are you pregnant or have a newborn?
Let’s discuss which of these options is right for your family during your next visit. Protecting our smallest patients is our biggest priority!

On this World Down Syndrome Day, we are proud to launch a new initiative focused on strengthening the support systems for our patients and their families.

Aligned with the 2026 global theme, "Together Against Loneliness," we are highlighting the vital importance of connection and inclusion. As a paediatric practice, we see firsthand that when we prioritize community and bridge gaps in social inclusion, we create better health outcomes for our children. Let’s work together to ensure no family feels isolated on this journey.🤝

💧 Small Kidneys, Big Job: World Kidney Day 2026
Today, March 12th, we celebrate World Kidney Day! 🩺✨

While we often think of kidney health as an "adult issue," the foundations for healthy kidneys are laid in childhood. These two bean-shaped powerhouses work hard every day to filter waste, balance fluids, and keep your child’s body running smoothly.

How can we protect young kidneys?
Focusing on these three simple habits to keep those "filters" in top shape:

💧 Hydration is Heroic: Encourage your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Pure water is always the best choice over sugary juices or sodas.

🍎 Watch the Salt: High salt intake can put extra strain on developing kidneys. Focus on fresh, whole foods and limit processed snacks.

🏃‍♂️ Keep Moving: Physical activity helps maintain a healthy blood pressure, which is vital for long-term kidney health.

When should you talk to us?
If you notice frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs), changes in urine color/odor, or unusual swelling in your child’s face or ankles, it’s always worth a check-up.

Early awareness leads to a lifetime of health! Let's give our children the best start possible. 💙

Baby Diarrhoea: A Parent’s Guide to What’s Normal and When to Call the Practice 🩺👶

Dealing with diarrhoea is never fun, especially when it’s your little one. It’s one of the most common reasons parents reach out to us, so we wanted to share some quick guidance on how to spot the difference between "normal tummy trouble" and when it’s time for a check-up.

What’s "Normal"?
Every baby is different! Sometimes, a looser stool is just a result of a change in diet, teething, or a mild tummy bug. If your baby is happy, playful, and, most importantly, staying hydrated, it’s often something that clears up on its own with time and TLC.

Signs It’s Time to Call our Practice:
We are always here to help. Please reach out if you notice any of the following:

▶️Signs of Dehydration: Fewer wet diapers than usual, a sunken soft spot (fontanelle) on the head, or no tears when crying.
▶️Persistent Fever: Especially in very young infants.
▶️Blood or Mucus: If you notice blood or significant mucus in their stool.
▶️Excessive Lethargy: If your baby seems unusually tired, difficult to wake, or is not interested in feeding.
▶️Duration: If the diarrhoea lasts longer than 24–48 hours or is severe/frequent.

How to help them at home:
The biggest priority is hydration. Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as usual, and follow your doctor’s advice regarding oral rehydration solutions if needed. Avoid sugary juices or sports drinks, as these can make it worse!

We’re here for you!💙
If you’re ever in doubt or just feel like something isn’t right, don't hesitate to give us a call. It’s always better to be safe and get the expert advice you need to put your mind at ease: 012 549 8900 / office@gjmw.co.za for advice and care.
